Michael Bisping breaks down the middleweight division

The UFC put the full force of the company’s P.R. machine behind Michael Bisping when they realized how big the U.K. market could be. As a light heavyweight, Bisping?s run was impressive but he fell short against Rashad Evans, and he has been a middleweight ever since. At 185 pounds he has been streaky, though [...]

?Cyborg? Santos wants her shot at Ronda Rousey

Strikeforce bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey will attempt to defend her belt on Saturday against Sarah Kaufman. Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos, the former featherweight champ, would like the next shot at Rousey.

"I really wanna fight Ronda," she said on Monday's edition of The MMA Hour. "I really want to. She says bad things about me. I never say bad things about my opponent. I want to do my best in the octagon, and if she says she wants to fight me, she can come to my weight or at 140."

Of course, there are a few problems with this potential matchup. For one, Santos is suspended through mid-December. Zuffa, the parent company of the UFC and Strikeforce, has shown reluctance in setting up fights for suspended fighters in the past because there is too much risk. Promoting a fight on the hopes a fighter can get a license is just begging for trouble.

Secondly, why would Rousey move up? It's Santos making the challenge. If she wants to fight Rousey, she should drop down to 135 -- and therein lies the problem. Santos has never weighed in lower than 135. For her bout with Hitomi Akano, she weighed in 7 pounds over. Don't expect 135 to happen. Rousey competed in the Olympics at 154 pounds and has fought at featherweight, but has been so comfortable at bantamweight that she won the belt there.

Do you think Rousey should move up to fight Santos? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

Frankie Edgar didn?t hesitate when offered October fight with Jose Aldo

When former UFC fighter Frankie Edgar got the call about facing featherweight title-holder Jose Aldo with less than two months to prepare for the bout it would have been easy for him to say ?thanks but no thanks?. Not only will Edgar be making his 145-pound debut in the bout, but ?The Answer? also fought a tough five-rounder against lightweight champion Benson Henderson in August.

However, according to Edgar, the thought of turning down the tilt never crossed his mind.

?In my head, I said yes right away. I just wanted to call my team and talk to them about it, more out of a respect of my coaches type situation. But I don’t think anybody could have talked me out of it at any point,? explained Edgar in an interview with MMAWeekly Radio.

?I?m not trying to compare myself to anyone else, I just know my situation. It was easy to say yes,? continued Edgar, alluding to a recent run of his peers turning down fights on late notice. ?I fought less than three weeks ago when I got the call ? (an) injury free fight. I was already back in the gym a little bit, so it was just an opportunity you can?t let slip.?

Edgar Plans to Have Brazilian Fans Cheering for Him by Fight’s Conclusion

The two talented 145ers will clash in the main event on October 13 at UFC 153. The 14-3-1 Edgar, a former lightweight champ, holds past wins over Gray Maynard, Sean Sherk, and BJ Penn, while Aldo is 21-1 with fourteen straight wins to his credit.

Initial autopsy report inconclusive in South Carolina fighter?s death

An initial autopsy performed on Tyrone "Teestea" Mims, an amateur fighter who died on Saturday night after competing at a regional fight show in South Carolina, has proven inconclusive, according to the Charleston County Coroner. Toxicology tests are pending.

Mims was stepping into the cage for the first time, and was competing at an event called "Fight Night at the Point VI." He allegedly suffered minimal damage during his bout, and witness accounts had him dominating throughout the first round. But Mims began appearing exhausted in the second round, andwhen the 30-year-old seemed unable to improve his position, the referee stopped the bout. Mims was taken backstage; when his condition deteriorated, he was taken to Medical University Hospital, where he died.

Mims, a Georgia resident, was taking part in a reality show titled "Georgia Boy's Grits-n-Glory." The show released the following statement:

One of the fighters, who happened to be our own Tyrone "Teestea" Mims, was fatally injured tonight, possibly as a result of his fight. The promoters and the South Carolina Fight Commission consulted with the fighters and all involved and decided as a result of the death of one of their own we should call off the rest of the fights. The promoters and the Athletic Commission did everything in their power according to protocol and this accident was beyond their control. We apologize for the inconvenience and hope you'll understand as we deal with the gravity of the situation. Our thoughts and prayers are with Teestea and his immediate family, which include his five children.

This is the second mixed martial arts-related death in South Carolina history. In 2010, amateur fighter Michael Kirkham died from a brain hemorrhage after suffering a knockout at an event in Aiken, S.C.

As per state regulation, amateur fighters must pass an eye exam, be screened for HIV and Hepatitis, and pass a cursory examination by a physician prior to getting in the cage. It is unknown if Mims had completed those requirements.

Chris Weidman?s reaction to the Anderson Silva-Stephan Bonnar match-up

Chris Weidman is at the front of the line of middleweights clamoring for a bout with Anderson Silva. His undefeated record and recent knockout of Mark Munoz makes him a good candidate for Silva's next title bout. However, Silva wasn't interested in a bout with Weidman. Instead of Silva, Weidman will fight Tim Boetsch at UFC 155.

So what was Weidman's reaction when Silva instead chose to fight light heavyweight Stephan Bonnar in a non-title bout at UFC 153?

Yep, that about sums it up.

Luke Rockhold expected to defend Strikeforce title in November

Strikeforce middleweight champ Luke Rockhold recently went online to announce he was heading back to the gym to start training for his next fight. Though the opponent has yet to surface, it looks like a time and place have at least been attached to the 27-year old?s next tilt.

Rockhold?s name has been attached to the newly revealed November 3 card in Oklahoma City. A heavyweight bout between Daniel Cormier-Frank Mir is also expected to take place at the event. Cormier is also a teammate of Rockhold’s at American Kickboxing Academy.

MMAWeekly was first to report Rockhold?s involvement at the show.

Though the middleweight division?s top contender is technically up in the air, the most likely candidate to fill the slot opposite Rockhold is undoubtedly Ronaldo Souza. ?Jacare? is a former 185-pound champion who has won twice since dropping the belt to Rockhold by decision a year ago. He holds an overall record of 16-3 with thirteen finishes.

Strikeforce CEO Hints Souza is Next in Line for Title-Shot

The 10-1 Rockhold was last seen outpointing Tim Kennedy in mid-July, his second successful title-defense.

UFC champ Jose Aldo escapes serious accident with only minor injuries

UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo may be an exceptionally tough individual but it would have been understandable if the 25-year old Brazilian found himself frightened this past weekend after being involved in an accident while riding his motorcycle. Aldo, who was knocked from his bike after a car hit it, was fortunate to escape with only minimal injuries including some bumps, bruises, scrapes, and a swollen foot.

Fortunately, it also appears Aldo is still healthy enough to continue training for his October 13 title-defense against Frankie Edgar at UFC 153.

TATAME confirmed Aldo?s condition with his coaches at Nova Uniao who assured the regional outlet ?Scarface? would not be riding his motorcycle again before facing off with Edgar and is expected to resume his preparation next week once he?s healed up completely.

21-1 Aldo Predicts Effort Against Edgar Will Result in “Fight of the Year”

Aldo?s bout with Edgar will mark the fourth time he?s put his UFC belt on the line, racking up victories over Mark Hominick, Kenny Florian, and Chad Mendes along the way. It is also his second straight defense in front of his fellow Brazilians.

UFC heavyweight Pat Barry wants bout before year?s end

Fans can add UFC heavyweight Pat Barry to the growing list of fighters seeking a scrap before the calendar rolls over into 2013. Barry has been out since May while nursing a broken thumb he sustained in a loss to Lavar Johnson at UFC on FOX 3.

Now, with a ?thumb?s up? from doctors, it appears the 33-year old is ready to resume training with the goal of giving it a go in the Octagon in the next few months.

?I told (matchmaker) Joe Silva already,? said Barry in an interview with MMAFight Corner. ?I already sent him a message saying ?I?m cleared by the doctor. I can start training again.? He was like ?Alright, great?when will you be ready?? I was like, ?this morning?. By the end of this year, I?m going to punch somebody in the face, whether it?s in the UFC or in Walgreens.?

Barry: “If I punch you in the head you’re gonna fall down…”

A fan-favorite for his personality and powerful strikes, Barry holds an overall record of 7-5 with six strike-based stoppages to his credit. However, when he takes to the cage ?HD? will be in desperate need of a win, dropping three of his last four fights with all involving some form of finish.

Chris Weidman waiting on title shot while Michael Bisping and Brian Stann are possibilities

UFC president Dana White recently went on Fuel TV's UFC tonight and discussed what is next for the middleweight division. First, he was asked if Chris Weidman would be the next 185-lber to fight Anderson Silva for the championship. After all, Weidman is undefeated, and recently destroyed Mark Munoz in a fight that was supposedly going to decide the next title shot.

"No. We'll see what happens. It could happen," White said.

Um, OK. That clears nothing up. Michael Bisping and Brian Stann are fighting at UFC 152, could that be for the title shot?

""It's an incredibly important fight. As soon as you start saying what's next for Anderson Silva, something pops up and there're tons of guys who are ready to fight him in the mix and we'll see what happens."

Bisping's last three fights include a loss to Chael Sonnen and wins over Jason Miller, who is no longer in the UFC, and Jorge Rivera who is now retired. Stann is 2-1 in his last three fights with a loss to Sonnen. Both fighters could not beat Sonnen, who just lost to Silva. But it's possible one of them could get the title shot over Weidman?

What's frustrating about a lack of a real method behind who gets title shots and who doesn't weakens the belt. There is no doubt that the New York Giants were the best team in the NFL because they won the tournament designed to find the champion.

Every team in the NFL had a chance to get to the playoffs by winning enough of their games. Though some teams earned a bye because of their regular season play, every team knew exactly what they had to do to get a chance at the Super Bowl title before they stepped foot on the field.

It's not that way in the UFC. Weidman has done everything that usually earns a title shot, but for whatever, unknown reason, he's not getting it. The fighter who has proven worthy of a title shot not getting it means the champion isn't facing the best.

Because the UFC is a promotion, not a league, and a private company, they can do what they want with title shots and be as transparent as they like. However, they cannot be surprised when media and fans start to question if "it's as real as it gets," as the UFC motto suggests.

Patrick Cote colliding with Alessio Sakara at UFC 154

During his recent absence from the promotion, UFC middleweight Patrick Cote never complained about his situation and simply kept fighting under the premise he would earn his way back onto the roster by racking up wins outside of the organization. After stringing together a quartet of successful clashes ?The Predator? did indeed get his chance but came up short on the judges? scorecards in a short-notice meeting with Cung Le.

However, it appears his professionalism and dedication to the cause has now paid off, as Cote was recently named to the lineup for UFC 154 where he?ll face fellow striker Alessio Sakara. The card takes place in Cote?s hometown of Montreal, Canada, while also featuring one of his best friends/training partners in the headlining slot ? Georges St-Pierre.

UFC officials have confirmed the bout.

Cote holds an overall record of 17-8 with eleven finishes including eight by way of knockout. However, the former title-contender has never actually been stopped with strikes himself despite owning past triumphs over the likes of hard-hitting foes like Drew McFedries and Scott Smith.

A Closer Look at Cote’s Loss to Le

Though Sakara is coming off back-to-back losses, the 30-year old is one of the division?s better boxers with a career mark of 15-9 and nine TKOs to his credit.

Daniel Cormier down to drop to 205 for fight with Jon Jones

When the UFC was recently left without an opponent for light heavyweight champion Jon Jones the promotion reached out to a handful of fighters in hopes of finding a competitor willing to step up and face the extremely talented 205er. In the end the organization ended up with Vitor Belfort, a middleweight with experience in the division and the reputation of being a legitimate legend. However, it was also revealed Mauricio Rua and Lyoto Machida turned down the opportunity while citing the need for more time to train.

While Strikeforce heavyweight Daniel Cormier may not have been able to make the required weight-related mark in a month, with more time he feels confident it wouldn?t be an issue and is equally certain he won’t be passing on a shot at Jones if offered it.

?Right now no one wants to fight Jon Jones, but sh*t, I?ll do it. I?ll fight Jon Jones. Guys are turning down the fight; you have to go to an old school fighter like Vitor Belfort to step up to the plate. That?s no knock on Machida or ?Shogun?, but if those guys want to coach on The Ultimate Fighter and move off to the side and let me fight Jones, I?ll do it. If no one wants the title shot then give it to Daniel,? the unbeaten Cormier explained in an in an interview with BJPenn.com.

Cormier Wants Immediate UFC Title-Shot with One More Win

Slimming down to 205 pounds may be realistic for the 5?11? Cormier but he also knows doing so requires a lot of work, or at least so he said in a previous interview with CNNSI.

?I’m a clear thinker and I know that I carry some extra fat and I could probably get to 205 if I needed to. But it would have to be a total lifestyle change. I just can’t do it the wrong way anymore,? admitted Cormier, referring to some issues he had cutting weight as an Olympic wrestler.

For now, however, the 33-year old will remain focused on his upcoming bout with Frank Mir. It is expected to be the 10-0 Cormier?s final appearance in Strikeforce before joining the UFC?s roster.
