Gegard Mousasi grinds out Strikeforce win

Gegard Mousasi grinds out Strikeforce win

Former Strikeforce light heavyweight champ Gegard Mousasi got his first Strikeforce win since losing the title with a decision over up-and-comer Ovince St. Preux in San Diego on Saturday night. Mousasi took it 29-28 on all three judges cards.

The first round started slowly, with both fighters using kicks to feel each other out. Mousasi caught a St. Preux kick to take him down and control him on the ground. Mousasi used short elbows and striking to damage OSP. Late in the round, Mousasi tried for a Kimura, but OSP rolled out and got top position for a moment. Mousasi again took control, putting OSP in a crucifix position to finish out the round.

Mousasi took over early in the second round, taking OSP down and pounding him out. After Mousasi worked in this position for more than half the round, the referee stood them up. OSP tried for a knee, but Mousasi caught it for a takedown, but then OSP took top position after hitting a switch.

With OSP behind going into the third round, he took Mousasi down and moved to side control. OSP moved to full mount, rode Mousasi out when he tried to escape and then landed several strikes. Mousasi escaped, and awkwardly took OSP across the cage as he took him down. From there, the two exchanged position several times. OSP tried to finish the fight with a choke, but he wasn't able to finish.

Fight stats showed that Mousasi led OSP 52-3 in power strikes, and that he was much more effective in ground striking. Mousasi has three wins in DREAM and a draw with Keith Jardine in Strikeforce over the past two years, and is now 32-3-2. OSP, who played football for the University of Tennessee, is now 11-5.

Dear Santa: What fight fans want for the holidays

Dear Santa: What fight fans want for the holidays

It's a giving time of year, so why not ask Santa Claus for what we want as fight fans? That, and a Red Rider BB gun.

An exciting bout from Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem: They are two hulking men, which can mean huge punches and a memorable bout, or it can be painful to watch. As Ben Fowlkes put it, when heavyweight fights go bad, they go really, really bad. So please, Santa Claus. Make this fight an ending to 2011 that we will want to remember.

Fuel TV on every cable and satellite provider: The station is kicking off 2012 with a marathon of UFC content. They'll follow that with "Countdowns," pre-fight and post-fight shows, nightly news, and live fights. Fuel is an MMA fan's dream come true, but it still isn't distributed in the majority of homes. So Santa? Can you talk to some cable executives and make sure that every fight fan can watch Fuel?

Fewer injuries to champs: In MMA, injuries are inevitable, but 2011 was an injury-palooza. Jon Jones' hand, Georges St. Pierre's knee, Anderson Silva's shoulder, and Frankie Edgar's back and rib had effects on four different title bouts. Cain Velasquez's shoulder injury, sustained in 2010, put the heavyweight title on ice for more than a year. We know you can't heal injuries, Santa, but can you share some sort of a preventative salve over fighters around the world? Perhaps a magic powder that you can shake from your sled as it passes over Brazil, Canada and the U.S?

Compelling drama on "The Ultimate Fighter": The show that kickstarted the UFC's growth has grown stale. With the move to FX, live fights and a new format, there is hope for rejuvenation. Please, Santa. Make this a must-watch show again.

A coherent vision behind Strikeforce: Last week, Strikeforce and Showtime announced that they will continue their relationship. Until that deal was signed, Strikeforce's future seemed in doubt, as SF champions Nick Diaz, Dan Henderson and Alistair Overeem were all brought over to the UFC. Now that we know Strikeforce has a future, knowing its purpose would be nice. Is it a feeder system to the UFC? Will fights between UFC and Strikeforce stars happen? Let us know, Dana White Santa.

What are we missing? Add to this wish list in the comments or on Facebook.

Documentary "Buffalo Girls" offers heartbreaking look at children's Muay Thai in Thailand

In America, as well as most civilized countries, children are generally taught not to fight or to only do so in instances where self-defense is required. The karate classes they’re enrolled in are about teaching discipline and respect, not as a means of utilization to injure another child. In Thailand it’s a different story. A [...]

Watch Dana White prove Duane Ludwig?s fastest knockout

In UFC president Dana White's latest video blog, he answered to the Nevada Athletic Commission's refusal to change Duane "Bang" Ludwig's knockout time. The UFC changed the time of Ludwig's 2006 knockout of Jonathan Goulet, giving Ludwig the fastest knockout in UFC history.

The NAC, on the other hand, said that the 11-second time still stands. To prove just how wrong they are, White worked with the UFC's production team to show the time of the three fastest knockouts in UFC history.

White doing this adds validity to his decision to update the record. It wasn't a capricious decision by White, but something fair, calculated and transparent. Nicely done.

The UFC, coming to an online slot machine near you

The UFC, coming to an online slot machine near you

The UFC is inextricably linked to gambling. Owners Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta also own Station Casinos, and several of the promotions biggest events took place in Las Vegas casinos. Soon, you'll be able to see fighters as you gamble your millions away on online slot machines.

SportsBusiness Journal reports that the UFC struck a deal with Endemol, a company that creates online slot machines. Though the deal will only be in the United Kingdom to start, they're hoping to expand to more places where online gaming is legal.

"Everybody wants to make money, but even more important than that, this is a great extension of our brand," Lawrence Epstein, UFC executive vice president said.

I can't wait to see how this turns out. If you hit the jackpot, does Dana White come on to congratulate you? If you bet conservatively, does he ask, "Do you want to be a [expletive] fighter?" When you bust, does an Anderson Silva punch come at your monitor?

Strikeforce weigh-in: With title fights official, is Masvidal focused?

Strikeforce weigh-in: With title fights official, is Masvidal focused?

The craziest weight class miss in recent memory was the only notable highlight of the Strikeforce weigh-in earlier today.

Jerron Peoples knew he was nowhere close to welterweight limit of 170 pounds, so his camp negotiated with Roger Bowling's to meet at 179. Incredibly enough, Peoples still missed the super high catchweight. He weighed 180.5 and couldn't get down to 179.

There were no such issues with pros like Gilbert Melendez (155) and Jorge Masvidal (155) along with the females fighting for the 145-pound title. Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos and Hiroko Yamanaka both came in on point.

After reading Kevin Iole's excellent piece on Masvidal's weird diet and nightlife habits, it's a surprise the challenger didn't come in weighing 200 pounds.

Masvidal is a self-proclaimed fast food junkie.

He spends a lot of time in the nation's fast food restaurants. He said, "I'm a humungous fan of McDonald's," putting a significant emphasis on the word "humungous." "I can't tell you how much I love that place. Taco Bell. Rally's. Checker's. I don't know if you have one of those where you are, but let me tell you, that place is awesome."

One of life's pleasures, he says, is a grilled burrito at Taco Bell. But he has so many favorites, it's difficult to remember all of them.

"Wow, that is one of the toughest questions ever," he said, asked his favorite fast-food meals. "There are so many great ones."

He also loves night clubs and strip clubs.

[...] Give him four hours and he's a happy man. He's often out prowling after midnight, hanging in night clubs, stopping in strip joints, just looking for a place to spend some time and have some fun.

"I just can't sleep a lot," he says. "I'm not out partying. I don't drink; I don't smoke. I'm just out hanging with my friends. I only need about four or five hours a sleep a night at most. So if I can't sleep, I might as well be out doing something."

Unless this is a recent development, there's no reason to call Masvidal on his unconventional habits. He enters the fight winning two straight and 3-of-4. He destroyed KJ Noons back in June.

UFC 140 postfight: Bonuses, Lesnar-Overeem rumors and flyweight division debuts on Mar. 3

UFC 140 postfight: Bonuses, Lesnar-Overeem rumors and flyweight division debuts on Mar. 3

With all the superlatives you can say about the fights this year in the UFC, tonight's event in Toronto may have produced the most spectacular set of finishes on the pay-per-view we've seen over the 12 months.

Chan Sung Jung knocked out Mark Hominick in just seven seconds and got the Knockout of the Night. Frank Mir posted a brilliant comeback and either broke and dislocated Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira's arm. He got Submission of the Night. The main event between Jon Jones and Lyoto Machida was called the Fight of the Night. All bonus winners got $75,000. On top of that, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira appeared to have broken some ribs on Tito Ortiz during his big win.

- There was a rumor reported by Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole that Alistair Overeem was going to drop out of his Dec. 30 fight against Brock Lesnar at UFC 141. Dana White strongly denied the report and said he hadn't heard anything. Keep in mind, the possibility still exists. Last week, Overeem left his new training camp in Las Vegas to tend to his ailing mother back in the Netherlands. He's due at a Nevada State Athletic Commission hearing on Monday in Las Vegas.

- White announced the official start of the flyweight era begins Mar. 3, 2012. There will be two fights with the winners meeting for 125-pound title at a later date. Joe Benavidez will face Yasuhiro Urushitani and Demetrious Johnson battles Ian McCall. Urushitani will be making his Zuffa debut.

UFC 140 postfight: Bonuses, Lesnar-Overeem rumors and flyweight division debuts on Mar. 3- Tito Ortiz wants one more fight in the UFC. He was beaten badly by "Lil' Nog," but wants to go out a winner. White was non-committal when asked if he would give another fight to the UFC legend.

- Ortiz went to the hospital where he was joined by "Big Nog." He's a tough guy. Anyone who saw his arm snap would be surprised to see the same guy smiling in an ambulance.

Update: White said he still hadn't gotten official word on the nature of injury, but damage to both the shoulder and elbow would require surgery.

- The event at the Air Canada Centre hauled in a gate of $3.9 million and a total of 18,303 fans.

- Jones said he'd like four or five months off.

"Fighting three times in 2012 would be nice. My goal is to be a company guy. Please Dana gimme a break, though," laughed Jones. "I am actually going to take time off. My parents did a great job of raising me and my brothers. I want to give them magical vacation."

Jones was a go-to guy for the promotion this year fighting in February, March, October and December.

- Mir stirred the pot a bit in reference to the Overeem rumors saying he feels healthy and three weeks is plenty of time to get ready for UFC 143. He'd also like a shot against new UFC heavyweight champ Junior dos Santos and thinks the door is still open even though the Lesnar-Overeem winner has been promised the next shot.

"If Brock goes out there and lays on Overeem for three rounds, maybe I'll get it," said Mir.

- Mir commented on the duel of jiu-jitsu skills showcased his fight against the legendary Nogueira.

"He tried to do BJJ move for BJJ move with me, and the guys I train with are pretty good. I'm used to guys trying to roll through on my kimura. I had a strong inclination Nog wouldn't tap," said Mir.

The Las Vegan also said Nogueira would submit nine out of 10 guys caught in a guillotine, but he's No. 10.

- White said he told UFC matchmaker Joe Silva that he'd like a quick turnaround for the Korean Zombie.

Submission of the Year: The Korean Zombie Introduces Twister to UFC

The introduction of the Twister to the UFC hangs on as our choice for the top Submission of the Year.

In March, "The Korean Zombie" Chan-Sung Yung utilized a Twister to submit Leonard Garcia, demonstrating that there are still new submissions to master in this ever-evolving game of MMA 17-plus years after the inaugural UFC.

Since the Twister has already been covered in our Half-Year awards, let's take a closer look at a recent submission that's just as worthy as being called the Submission of the Year.

No. 2: Frank Mir breaks Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira's arm (UFC 140 on Dec. 10)
Long considered as one of the best heavyweight Brazilian jiu-jitsu artists, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira went over 12 years and 42 fights before he finally fell prey to a submission maneuver.

It all went down in a rematch earlier this month against Frank Mir at UFC 140. Nogueira had Mir rocked and was seemingly close to finishing Mir on the ground with punches. However, Nogueira took the risk to attempt a guillotine choke (giving up position in the process) rather than maintain control on top with punches.

Mir escaped, and that was all he needed to turn the fight around. Nogueira tried to hit the switch to take Mir's back but Mir held on to stay on top. Mir then applied a kimura and hopped over to side mount. Nogueira tried rolling as an escape but Mir followed him, holding onto the move, breaking the Brazilian great's right arm and forcing him to tap.

It wasn't inconceivable that Nogueira would lose by submission. All the best grapplers are likely to submit at some point when fighting top flight competition. And Mir is no slouch on the ground. He's been tapping out BJJ black belts since his UFC debut 10 years ago at UFC 34.

The distinguishing characteristic of this finish comes from Nogueira's unwillingness to tap until his arm had already been broken. In a sport with no shortage of punishing sights, the image of Nogueira's bent arm went above disturbing, and into cringe-worthy.

No. 3: Richard Hale repeats Toby Imada's inverted triangle choke (Bellator 58 on March 26)

In March, Richard Hale made his Bellator debut with a submission as if he were a fighter 50 pounds lighter. The Bellator light heavyweight performed the 2009 Submission of the Year popularized by Toby Imada. While hanging upside down, resting on top of opponent Nik Fekete's shoulders, Hale locked in a triangle choke to render Fekete unconscious. Hale put himself on the map by making the best out of an atypical, undesirable position.

No. 4: Jon Jones chokes out Lyoto Machida (UFC 140 on Dec. 10)

In line with Mir's finish against Nogueira, Jon Jones' modified guillotine came after trailing against his opponent and produced an impressive win with a brutal finish. After knocking down Lyoto Machida in the second round and with Machida trying for the takedown to reset, Jones grabbed a front headlock and drove Machida standing against the fence. Jones then applied a modified guillotine (a guillotine with a different grip), the same finish he used to defeat Ryan Bader earlier this year but in this instance pressed Machida against the cage for additional pressure. Machida, refusing to tap, went limp and the bout was called off by referee "Big" John McCarthy. Rather than guide Machida gently to the floor, Jones released the hold sending a bloodied and unconscious Machida crashing to the mat. A definitive conclusion to perhaps the best year of an individual in the history of MMA.

No. 5: Diego Brandao's blink-and-you'll-miss-it armbar over Dennis Bermudez (TUF 14 Finale on Dec. 3)

In one of the best fights of the year, Diego Brandao submitted Dennis Bermudez with an armbar to clinch his first UFC win and the TUF 14 featherweight title. Known for his aggressive striking style, Brandao was on his way to winning the first round before walking into a right hand. In pursuit of a TKO or at least stealing the round, Bermudez stayed on top of Brandao, actively throwing down punches. But all of a sudden, Brandao threw up his legs for an armbar and in seconds rolled Burmudez over for the win. The submission came out of nowhere in what had already been an explosive round of fighting.

Frank Mir breaks Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira?s arm to win at UFC 140

Frank Mir breaks Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira?s arm to win at UFC 140

Frank Mir was the first man to ever knock out Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. At UFC 140 on Saturday night, he also became the first man to submit Nogueira.

Nogueira started the bout by landing short punches, then moving in for a takedown attempt. The two clinched, but it was Mir who got the takedown. Nogueira worked his way back to his feet, and the two continued to clinch against the fence.

The fight took a turn when Nogueira unloaded several strikes, knocking down Mir. It appeared that Mir was close to being finished when Nogueira rolled to try and get a submission. Instead, Mir got the submission, rolling into a Kimura and breaking Nogueira's arm. The fight was stopped at 3:38.

[UFC 140 video highlights: Mir vs. Nogueira]

Mir, the one-time heavyweight champion, is on a three-fight win streak which includes a KO, submission and a decision. His record is 16-5. Nogueira's last bout was a thrilling knockout at UFC 134, but the loss gives him a record of 33-7-1.

UFC 140?s Three Stars: Jon Jones, Chan Sung Jung and Frank Mir

UFC 140?s Three Stars: Jon Jones, Chan Sung Jung and Frank Mir

UFC 140 marked the UFC's second trip to Toronto this year, and like UFC 129, it's another candidate for card of the year. The pay-per-view card alone would have earned that designation, but the preliminary fights had plenty of exciting moments from Igor Pokrajac, John Cholish and Jake Hecht.

Who stood tallest among giants? Here are Cagewriter's picks. Tell us yours in the comments or on Facebook.

No. 1 star -- Jon Jones: Did that first round make you doubt? Seeing Jones confused on how to handle Machida's movement early in the fight made his win even more exciting. That was the first time Machida has ever been submitted in 20 fights. Jones' tally for the year: three submissions, one TKO, one belt won, two title defenses, and a well-earned vacation.

No. 2 star -- Chan Sung Jung: "The Korean Zombie" was the most unpopular man at the Air Canada Centre on Saturday night. He took advantage of Mark Hominick's aggressiveness from the bell, and knocked him right out. That earned him the UFC record* for fastest knockout, but also angered the fans who had gathered to watch hometown hero Hominick. He quickly calmed them by finding the right words to say in English, a language he doesn't speak. "I love Canadians!"

No. 3 star -- Frank Mir: Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira had Mir in trouble early in the bout, but Mir stayed calm and took advantage of his position. He rolled into a Kimura that MMA fans -- and Big Nog -- won't soon forget.

*Jung is now tied with Todd Duffee for a seven-second KO. Duane Ludwig is trying to get the time of his knockout of Jonathan Goulet amended by the Nevada Athletic Commission to earn him the record.
