Cris ?Cyborg? Justino ?Coming to Get? Ronda Rousey After UFC 168 Win

Miesha Tate took UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey to uncharted territory Saturday by extending their shootout into the third round at UFC 168. Unfortunately for Tate, Rousey ultimately bullied her way to another armbar submission victory. Rousey is clearly the class of the women’s 135-pound division. Outside of being highly skilled, “Rowdy” is simply bigger [...]

What We?re Thankful For 2013: Cagewriter

With Thanksgiving upon us, each Yahoo Sports blog is taking stock of what they're thankful for while also providing menu suggestions and a sport-specific viewing guide for when you hit your couch. Share what you're thankful for on Twitter with the #YSBThanks hashtag or in the comments below. Have a safe and happy holiday!

Elias Cepeda, Cagewriter editor

The fight fan in me is especially thankful for five things this Thanksgiving. Check out our list and let us know yours in the comments section!

The UFC making it past 20 years: Long before the UFC was able to hold two events in a single week, on separate continents, as it does now, MMA fans were lucky to get a UFC card more than once every other month. In the dark days, MMA fans had to make friends with the one guy in the gym who had a satellite because UFC pay-per-views were banned from cable.

Those who wanted to check out Pride events from Japan often had to wait until Sunday mornings to wade in the legally dubious waters of sites like Daily Motion to watch bootlegged copies of fights that were uploaded by nerds for other geeks (not that I'd know anything about that). This was an especially tough pill to swallow since top boxing had essentially been phased out of the mainstream years ago in the shadow of the big but short-lived pay-per-view dollars.

Now, because of the UFC more than any other fight promotion, quality fights are readily available either live or previously recorded every day all over the world. You can keep your Detroit Lions stinking up the joint on Thanksgiving day. I?ll be watching fight tapes while stuffing my face on Thursday.

UFC matchmaking: For well over a decade now, the UFC has had the best matchmaking in all of fight sports. Part of that is due to the talent of matchmakers Joe Silva and Sean Shelby in the UFC and part of it is because the UFC is now home to most of the top talent in the MMA world.

The downside of UFC hegemony is that fighters don?t have the same options they used to when they could decide between fighting in the UFC, Strikeforce, Pride or other high-paying promotions. An upside to the UFC being the lone survivor among top MMA promotions is that UFC brass usually has the ability to make the fights that fans want to see.

How long have we been waiting to see Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight Manny Pacquiao? Chances are we?ll all keep waiting until either we or Mayweather and Pac are in wheelchairs.

If Manny and Floyd were MMA fighters, they?d likely be fighting in the UFC instead of for warring promotions and cable networks. There?s no way that Dana White would let that type of fight pass him by.

Inter-weight division super fights are another matter, but it is rare that the best fighters in the same division get away without fighting one another in the UFC.

UFC champions thinking for themselves: This may sound contradictory to the prior point but I?m very thankful that at least a select few UFC fighters are now beginning to have some leverage and autonomy in their careers. UFC president Dana White has lamented the loss of total and complete control over his fighters as they?ve grown richer and more famous.

Too bad for him. And, if we have to wait longer for our favorite gladiator to suit back up because he or she needs a rest, too bad for us.

When Jon Jones, one of the most active top challengers and champions in UFC history, decides that he?d rather heal up some leg injuries and not rush into another fight just because White thinks he could make money with ?Bones? headlining a Super Bowl weekend card, he should have that right.

Nike, Gatorade and many other large companies sponsor Jones now. Georges St. Pierre and Anderson Silva also enjoy global fame and blue-chip endorsement deals.

It is no coincidence that these three have all recently drawn the ire of White.

Fighters like Jones, Silva and St. Pierre are not as desperate for their next UFC fight purse as champions of the past were so they are able to better consider what is best for their health.

Accessibility of MMA personalities: I?m often asked who my favorite fighter to interview is. That?s hard to answer but any answer would start with whoever is the most accessible and conversation-friendly. In MMA, there?s a lot of such fighters, coaches and promoters to choose from.

For the most part, those in the MMA business that fans want to hear from are easy to get ahold of, are open and honest in conversation and don?t suffer from the same inhibiting suspicion that more established celebrities in society do. That makes for insightful and inside coverage for fight fans of their favorite athletes.

Of course, as MMA grows in popularity, the tabloid idiots will continue to come out of the wood work. The more often fighters are accosted at airports and asked to comment on baby and family health rumors, the more guarded they will become.

For now, all of us covering MMA should be thankful for all that we get.

Women in UFC: The finale of the first ever Ultimate Fighter season (TUF 18) to feature women is coming up on Saturday. On TUF 18, the women on the cast were the best and most watched fighters.

Those women proved what Dana White has already admitted ? that he was wrong for so many years in thinking that the interest and talent was not sufficient for the UFC to have women?s divisions. At least the UFC caught on eventually.

Now, the organization has plans to create a second division for women, at 115 pounds. This decision could help pave the way for a men?s 115 pound category and help with international expansion. The UFC has it?s sights set on Mexico and the Philippines, for example.

Try expanding your product there without having lighter weight classes. Ain?t gonna happen.

The Cagewriter Thanksgiving menu for the MMA Wannabe/Fan:

  • Plenty of lean turkey for protein. Plenty more not so lean gravy because, bulking
  • Whatever disgusting "energy" drink that was advertised ad nauseum the last time you watched The Ultimate Fighter. Nothing says healthy like jitter-inducing stimulants and artificial dyes and sweeteners. Drink what the pros get paid to pretend they drink!
  • TRT injections, which are totally cool because we've got a doctor we pay to say it's ok telling us it's ok and we've got a therapeutic use exemption for them. We can't be expected to stuff our faces at the Thanksgiving table at the same pace as these young guys do. We'd practically be at a disadvantage if we didn't use these drugs.

The 2013 Cagewriter Thanksgiving UFC viewing guide:

There's plenty UFC television programming to help you turn into a pumpkin on your couch while you gorge yourself on pumpkin pie this Thanksgiving. All times in Eastern Standard Time.

Renan Barao eager for showdown with Dominick Cruz at UFC 169

Renan Barao has now twice defended an interim UFC bantamweight title that, fairly or not, has the distinction of being considered "less than." Full champ Dominick Cruz has been sidelined for nearly two years with an injured ACL.

Finally, the two champions will meet in Feb. at UFC 169 in Newark, NJ to unify the titles and settle who the best 135 pound MMA fighter in the world really is. Speaking with Chuck Mindenhall in New York City recently to promote the fight with Cruz, Barao expressed his excitement for the highly anticipated bout.

"I'm truly happy this fight is finally going to happen," he said.

"With all the media around it, it just really makes me happy to see that people recognize us."

Not that the Brazilian feels he still has to prove that he's the rightful bantamweight king, or anything.

"I personally feel like that I?ve been a champion, not just now, but for some time," Barao said.

"This is just a chance to unify the belts and show everybody what I can do, and keep these belts for a while."

The Nova Uniao team member says his advantage over Cruz will come from the strength of his stable, not from simply being active while Cruz may have collected rust.

"I think my advantage is really my own training," he said.

"I?ve always said that. It?s the best. I train with the best in the world, and I?ll just be well prepared and that?s going to be my advantage."

Who do you have in this unification fight on Super Bowl Saturday? Let us know in the comments section.

Fighter drug tests come back clean from UFC 167

Heading into UFC 167, drug testing was a hot topic thanks to an incoherent series of spats, negotiations and thinly veiled allegations between welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and challenger Johny Hendricks. In the end, they and every other fighter that competed on the UFC 167 card were tested by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC).

Today, NSAC executive director Keith Kizer told Cagewriter via email that all 24 post-fight fighter tests from UFC 167 have come back clean. the NSAC tests for a host of performance-enhancing and recreational substances as well as some banned over the counter products.

We're sure this won't stop the ceaseless speculation around the sport's top fighters for long but it may quiet the the hubub for at least a short while. We suppose there's plenty controversy from the main event's decision and fall-out from St. Pierre's vague post-fight announcement to take everyone's attention away from drugs for a bit.

Georges St. Pierre to make announcement at press conference Friday

According to the Journal de Montreal, UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre will convene a press conference this Friday with local media to make an announcement. The long-time champion made waves when he announced that he was stepping away from MMA after being awarded a controversial split decision win over Johny Hendricks in their UFC 167 main event bout last month.

Since that time, St. Pierre's coaches, mentor, teammates, rivals and bosses have all speculated as to whether the 32 year old will indeed retire, take a leave of absence or immediately get back into action. The fighter himself, however, has been mostly silent.

That should change at Friday's press conference. What do you think St. Pierre will announce? Let us know in the comments section.

Nate Diaz: I?ll be fighting for UFC title soon

Nearly one year ago, Nate Diaz had worked his way to a UFC lightweight title bout against then champion Benson Henderson. Since losing a decision to "Bendo," however, a lot has changed for Diaz and the division.

Diaz lost his following fight by KO to Josh Thomson and Henderson would go on to lose his belt to Anthony Pettis. Still, ahead of his TUF 18 main event rubber match against Gray Maynard, Diaz is confident that he'll be fighting for a championship again soon.

"This is survival of the fittest," Diaz recently said during an UFC interview.

"I beat [Maynard], I'm going to hunt down Pettis and Thomson's ass and take them out. I'll be back fighting for a title real quick."

Diaz first faced Maynard in an exhibition bout on season 5 of The Ultimate Fighter, choking him into submission with a guillotine choke. The two faced one another again 2010 and Maynard won a close decision that Diaz still disputes.

"I'm going to beat Gray Maynard. It's the third time fighting him. Finish it off and seal the deal. I won the first one. I think I won the second fight, too. You can ask him how he won the fight. I'll bet you he don't got too good of an answer," the Stockton, CA native says.

Diaz isn't discounting the danger Maynard poses in their third fight this Saturday in Las Vegas. He simply believes that he'll be able to bully "The Bully" and close this chapter in his career.

"I've gotten better and I think he's gotten better, too. He wrestles good and he hits hard. He's a good athlete. It's nothing I haven't dealt with before," Diaz says.

"I'm going to be in his face. I'm going to let him know that I'm there to win."

UFC?s Anthony Pettis out 6-8 months, wants Nate Diaz upon return

We were afraid of this. New UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis recently suffered the latest in a string of serious knee injuries this year and had to pull out of a title defense against Josh Thomson.

Now, Pettis says that the injury will keep him sidelined for six to eight months.

?The doctor said six to eight months. I?m hoping six months, so hopefully I?ll be back for a July fight," Pettis told UFC Tonight.

When the champ does return, he hopes it will be to face outspoken Nate Diaz.

?Nate Diaz has been talking so much. He looked pretty decent in his last fight. I hope he works his way up and we get to fight," Pettis explained.

Diaz just beat former two-time title challenger Gray Maynard with a first round TKO, of course, and has said that he himself wants to sit out until a top contender gets injured and he can fight for the title. So...who knows what will happen?

Between injuries, retirements, weight cuts and just plain weird luck, next summer Anderson Silva and Georges St. Pierre could be fighting for the UFC lightweight title for all we know (fingers crossed).

Who do you want to see Pettis face when he finally gets healthy? Let us know in the comments section.

Robbie Lawler beats Rory MacDonald, steps into UFC welterweight title contender role

Robbie Lawler was as good as advertised Saturday night, making his welterweight match up against Rory MacDonald knock down, drag out scrap and winning a split decision at UFC 167. From the onset, Lawler was the aggressor, throwing and landing more strikes in a close first round.

In the second, MacDonald continued to bide his time, apparently looking for opportunities to counter or get a take down. With less than two minutes left, MacDonald turned the second round in his favor with a take down.

Lawler made a statement in the third and final round, however, knocking "Aries" down twice with punches. MacDonald refused to give up and ended the round with another take down and elbows landed to Lawler's head from on top inside the half-guard of "Ruthless".

The late surge was not enough for MacDonald in the eyes of two of the ringside judges, however, and they scored the fight for Lawler. Lawler has now won three straight fights since returning to the UFC - second straight over a top-ten opponent - and very well could find himself fighting for the welterweight title soon.

For free agent Ben Askren, glory more important than money

In a new MMA Fighting interview, Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren says that he'd happily turned down more money to re-sign with the organization in order to seek out better competition in the UFC.

"I was getting to the end of my exclusive period with Bellator. [Bellator CEO] Bjorn [Rebney] made me a couple offers, and they weren't bad offers and Bellator isn't a bad company, but my main reason why I got into the sport of mixed martial arts was to be number one in the world," Askren explained.

"What I kept telling Bjorn was, 'Hey, I'm [ranked] number 6 in the world, I want to fight numbers 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 right now.' All those people are the UFC and that is only place to accomplish that. So that was the point we kept going back and forth on. He and I pretty much said, there's no use in keeping matching rights and everything else if that's what you want you want to do. He was gracious enough to respect my wishes to want to fight the best in the world."

According to Askren, who has publicly offered to fight either UFC champ Georges St. Pierre or his teammate Rory MacDonald for free, the goal of proving that he's the best fighter in the world is much more important to him than money. "I'm not willing to compromise my goals for monetary value," he continued.

And though the wrestler is an unrestricted free agent at this time and options abound for him, including a potential roster spot in the World Series of Fighting (WSOF), he's only interested in fighting in the UFC.

"What's the challenge if I go and fight [in the WSOF]? If I'm going to fight guys below me, I would have stayed in Bellator and took the money they were offering," he explained.

The outspoken and undefeated champion is not deterred by UFC president Dana White saying that he is not interested in signing him, either. "I don't take it all personally, it's business," he said.

Askren says the plan is for his management to meet with White and UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta in the promotion's home of Las Vegas.

"My management is going to be hopefully go to Vegas meet with Lorenzo and Dana this week," Askren said.

"Once that happens I'll have better idea where they actually stand."

Hector Lombard calls Georges St. Pierre ?stupid,? and Jake Shields ?boring?

UFC welterweight contender Hector Lombard had harsh words for colleagues Jake Shields and Georges St. Pierre recently. Lombard made fun of the welterweight champ St. Pierre's fear of aliens to MMA Junkie this week and also called out Jake Shields.

?He?s so scared of aliens coming up and taking him,? Lombard said of St. Pierre.

?You have to be really messed up to think about all that stuff. Like honestly, I have a lot of respect for him and the stuff he?s done for the sport, but how can you think about an alien coming and going to take you? Are you kidding me or what? It?s stupid.?

As for Shields, who has not lost in his last four fights, Lombard calls him "boring," and promises that he'll make the American really fight.

?He?ll make it boring, or I?m going to end up knocking him out. It?s going to be one or another," said Lombard, who has lost two out of his last four fights.

Though he may question St. Pierre's sanity, Lombard isn't ready to call out the possibly retired champ just yet.

?Up to this point, [St-Pierre] can do whatever he wants,? Lombard said.

?He?s done a lot for the sport. There?s no point for me to go and criticize the man. What I do know is that I have to win my next fight and go from there.?

Who do you want to see Lombard fight next? Let us know in the comments section.

Rebellion Roundtable: What Was The First UFC You Saw?

Twenty years ago today a bunch of dudes ? big dudes, scary dudes, martial arts dudes ? climbed into a cage, and in a never-before-seen pay-per-view competition that was more ?fall of the Roman Empire? than real athletic endeavor, they beat the ever-loving crap out of each other. Chael Sonnen fears for safety as coach on TUF: Brazil, requested extra security from UFC

UFC moneyweight Chael Sonnen fights next week against Rashad Evans but already has his following two engagements set. Sonnen will fly to South America after UFC 167 to be coach opposite rival Wanderlei Silva on the next Brazilian edition of The Ultimate Fighter.

Over the years, Sonnen has lobbed many xenophobic insults at Brazilian fighters as well as the nation itself. In a recent interview with Brazilian news outlet Folha de Sao Paulo, Sonnen admitted to not feeling safe as a future TUF coach in Brazil and said that he requested extra security for his time filming the reality competition series.

Asked simply if he felt safe in Brazil, Sonnen replied, "no."

[Related: Vitor Belfort's UFC rebirth remains marred by TRT issue]

The interviewer then asked Sonnen specifically if he worried that an offended Brazilian citizen might shoot him while he was in the country. Sonnen paused before saying, "I had not thought of shots...I was more concerned with the possibility of a lynching, perhaps a knife attack. But I think it is possible, yes."

Sonnen confirmed asking UFC President Dana White and the UFC to take extra measures to keep him safe while he coached against Silva on The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil. "Major steps are being taken," he said.

"Dana White takes care of that sort of thing. The measures he suggested are very sophisticated, more than I would suggest. But I understand that I'm not totally safe in the U.S., either."

Do you think Sonnen will face any problems while a temporary resident of Brazil and how do you think the Brazilian fighters on his team will react to "The American Gangster?" Let us know in the comments section.

UFC champ Georges St-Pierre may retire after November fight

On Nov. 16, UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre will defend his belt against Johny Hendricks. According to GSP?s head coach, Firas Zahabi, the champ is hungry and motivated right now but there is no guarantee that he will be back for more after this next fight.

?It takes a special mind to do MMA,? Zahabi said in a recent interview.

?We need to train every day, do not go out and do not do things you love. Train all day long. It is not easy. It?s really something.?
The TriStar coach says that St. Pierre has yet to determine if he?ll be interested in going through all that again after the Hendricks fight. If the French Canadian does not feel the same desire to sacrifice and train hard, Zahabi says St. Pierre will retire after the next fight.

?Georges told me?if he still has the motivation for another training camp, he will continue. Otherwise, he will retire,? Zahabi said.

?Motivation is the most important thing. When you do not have it, you have nothing. Georges is motivated for this camp. He?s trained well.?

St. Pierre is over eleven years into his MMA career, most of which has been in the UFC. Though the 32 year-old has looked sharp in his most recent fights, with wins over Carlos Condit and Nick Diaz since returning from ACL replacement surgery, it may be that he?s nearing the end of the road by his own choice.

What do you think? Is St. Pierre talking privately about retirement a sign that he?s not completely focused on beating Johny Hendricks next month at UFC 167 or will a sense of finality add to his motivation to go out on a high note?

Olympic wrestling gold medalist Jordan Burroughs decides against MMA

Eddie Alvarez and Michael Chandler?s lightweight title rematch Saturday night at Bellator 106 thrilled fans and prompted one particular high profile one to let the world know that MMA is too rough for him. World and Olympic freestyle wrestling champion Jordan Burroughs had previously said that he?d get into MMA after the 2016 Olympic games but over the course of Alvarez vs. Chandler II and several tweets, the American wrestler appeared to think better of the idea.

Jordan Burroughs ?@alliseeisgold2 Nov

Watching Bellator. @MikeChandlerMMA is a stud. I wrestled him 2x in college. I would much rather wrestle him than fight him!

Jordan Burroughs ?@alliseeisgold2 Nov

That was a great fight. Congrats to both of those guys. Well done.

Jordan Burroughs ?@alliseeisgold2 Nov

MMA is brutal. Great sport, but not for me. I will never step foot in the Octagon.

Jordan Burroughs ?@alliseeisgold3 Nov

I'm a wrestler at heart. Always have been. Always will be.

MMA has always had champions with a strong amateur wrestling background. Mark Coleman, Randy Couture, Dan Henderson, Cain Velasquez, Daniel Cormier and Ben Askren to name just several. It appears as if Burroughs has no intention of trying to become the next.

Physical skills are only one part of fighting ? the will to fight and all the associated psychology are also requisite. Do you think Burroughs is making a mistake in ruling out MMA or do you think he?s better off sticking to wrestling?

Let us know in the comments section. But first, check out some wrestling highlights from Burroughs below.

[VIDEO] UFC Primetime: Georges St-Pierre vs. Johny Hendricks

Episode 1 of the documentary serial, UFC Primetime: St-Pierre vs. Hendricks, premiered Wednesday night and took fans inside the lives and camps of both welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and challenger Johny Hendricks as they head into their UFC 167 main event bout next month. Watch the full episode above to see what kinds of training St. Pierre is doing in Montreal and Hendricks has been doing in Dallas.

A couple things stood out to Cagewriter while watching UFC Primetime. First off, St. Pierre seems completely focused on motivated to fight Hendricks.

When you're champ as long as the Canadian has been, there's always the question of if you can stay motivated to keep doing what you've been doing. In St. Pierre's case, there's been indication that he's already thinking of retirement.

In episode 1 of Primetime, however, we see a St. Pierre who is either a really good actor or that he is truly obsessed with Hendricks. Unfortunately, we'd already seen enough commercials and "films" that he's appeared in to know the former isn't the case.

But take two examples from last night's UFC Primetime to let the point sink in. St. Pierre talks about learning recently during a media tour to promote the fight that Hendricks was planning to get to Las Vegas - the site of the bout - three weeks early in order to train in and acclimate himself to the regulation-sized Octagon.

St. Pierre lost his mind thinking that his opponent might have even the smallest advantage there and so says he purchased and and had constructed a full-sized UFC Octagon replica in the Tri-Star gym in Montreal where he trains.

Also, Primetime shows that St. Pierre and his coach Firas Zihabi have brought in Rick Story to train with the champ in preparation for Hendricks and UFC 167. Now, Rick Story is an excellent fighter but he's certainly not red-hot or appearing to be at his all-time sharpest of late.

Story has lost two out of his last three bouts and four out of his last six. However, Story is the only person to have ever beaten Hendricks in an MMA bout, back in 2010. Therein lies his true value to the Hendricks-obsessed St. Pierre.

There's lots of fun intimate, family time and training footage in episode 1 of Primetime, but the main other take away for us was simply this - Johny Hendricks may have been the most adorable little kid in America.

While learning about Hendricks' life growing up in a tough, wrestling family, we're treated to photo after photo of Hendricks being way too cute for anyone's good. As fearsome as he looks now as a grown man and knockout specialist, it is hilarious to see pictures of a chubby-cheeked and wide-smiling little Johny in Primetime.

(Lil' Johny Hendricks. Cutest. Baby. Ever.)
