UFC?s Nick Ring rushes to rescue of couple being mugged in Calgary
A group of Calgary teenagers picked the wrong time to start a fight. UFC middleweight Nick Ring, who will meet Court McGee on July 21 at UFC 149 in Calgary, witnessed a group of teens beating up two people who were waiting at a bus stop in the 9600 block of MacLeod Trail in the city.
Ring jumped out of his car, checked on the victims and then helped run down several of the suspects. Calgary police arrested three juveniles and charged them with common assault. Their names weren't released, but they were a 17-year-old boy, a 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl. Sgt. Kevin Brookwell, a spokesman for the Calgary police, said a fourth male juvenile is being sought for questioning and could also face arrest.
The victims were both 17, a boy and a girl. The boy was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries and released.
"I saw these little punk cowards picking on defenseless people and I knew they needed to come to justice," Ring told Cagewriter.
Ring had just finished a yoga class and had gone to Starbucks for a coffee when he said he noticed a group of what he believed were 10 people beating up on a young couple and robbing them. He said he saw the group run off with the woman's backpack after beating the couple up.
He pulled over, checked on the victims, then got back in his car and chased the assailants. When he got near them, he jumped out of the car and chased on foot. A bystander, whose name was not released, also gave chase and held down one of the alleged assailants as Ring called police.
Ring called the pack of kids who assaulted the couple "hoodlums" and said they showed no courage.

"They look they think they came right from a rap video," Ring said. "They watch too many movies and they obviously think they're a lot tougher than they are. They think it's OK to rob people, apparently, but it's not. This was a situation where they were just punks, and not very tough people. No one with an ounce of bravery would consider any such actions.
"I wasn't afraid of one of them. They were wannabe gangsters and they needed to be dealt with."
Ring said he didn't know the name of the other person who came to the victims' aid. He said that man did most of the work in subduing the assailants.
"I hope he comes forward and gets the proper credit, because he took some pretty heroic actions," he said.
Brookwell said he did not have the name of the person who assisted Ring. He said common assault is the lowest-level crime.
"I think what they'll look at here is a conditional discharged in which the [suspects] get a stern warning, some community [service] time and the admonishment to be good for a certain period," Brookwell said.
Brookwell said that while there may have been more persons at the bus stop where the assault occurred, "the best information we have in front of us right now is that there were five involved and could be a sixth."

Antonio Silva ?could not see a thing? in UFC 146 loss to Cain Velasquez
Antonio Silva sustained a cut in his loss to Cain Velasquez that gushed a whole lot of blood. Much of that blood went into his eyes, so it's not surprising that Silva said he couldn't see a thing in the fight.
"One of the main reasons I got defeated was that. I couldn't see a thing, there was a lot of blood and my eyes were burning. I tried to defend myself and not get hit at, shaking my head to see if I could get rid of that blood, but there was no way around it. From that moment on my corner was my eyes."
It's bad enough to not be able to see. Can you imagine not being able to see and having Velasquez repeatedly hit you? Silva tweeted that the cut required 13 stitches.
Not surprisingly, he received a medical suspension after the bout. He is out of action until July 23, possibly up to November if his nose is broken. Both possibly out of action until November, Velasquez and Jamie Varner received the longest suspensions because of hand issues.

Dan Hardy?s KO, Glover Teixeira?s submission and Jamie Varner?s upset highlight UFC 146 undercard
UFC 146's main card is about heavyweights, but the smaller weights made their mark on the preliminary card in Las Vegas on Saturday night.
Jamie Varner scored an early upset with a TKO of previously unbeaten Edson Barboza. Taking the fight on short notice, Varner fought in the UFC for the first time since 2007. He gave Barboza trouble early with a takedown. Later in the first round, he pressured him against the fence, and peppered him with punches until Barboza fell to the ground. The bout was stopped at 3:23 in the first round.
"I can't believe it's me. It's so surreal. I just knocked out Edson Barboza, who was this monster in my mind," Varner said after the fight.
Dan Hardy broke his losing streak impressively. After losing four straight bouts, Hardy knocked Duane Ludwig out with a nasty left hook and followed with three elbows to end the fight at 3:51 in the first round.
"It felt great out there. You can put all the work in and if it goes wrong for 15 minutes then none of it matters. I've had a bad run. I took some time off and then I changed everything - new team, new training. It feels great. When you connect with the right shot you know its over. I put my arms up in celebration a little prematurely but when he looked back up I wasn't going to let it slip away so I went in and got the finish," Hardy said after the bout.
C.B. Dollaway used takedowns and ground control to get a unanimous decision win over Jason "Mayhem" Miller, 29-28, 30-26, 29-28. Miller had strong stand-up early but couldn't keep Dollaway's takedowns at bay. This is Miller's second loss in a row.
Diego Brandao and Darren Elkins fought a bruising, bloody fight to end the preliminary card with a 29-28, 29-28, 29-28 decision win for Elkins. In the grappling-filled bout, Brandao was strong in the first round, but the momentum swung in Elkins' favor in the second round. With a bloody ear, Elkins controlled the final round.
Glover Teixeira had plenty of pre-fight hype going into the UFC 146 prelims, and he lived up to it with a dismantling of Kyle Kingsbury. He used nasty ground and pound to beat up Kingsbury before finishing him with an arm-triangle choke at 1:53 in the first round.
"I'm really happy a debut in the UFC feels like my debut in MMA. It was that exciting to me. I'm just so happy to be here and after Dana's speech last night I just went out there and decided to go for it. I wanted him to remember my fight, and me," Teixeira said.
Paul Sass got in on the submission game with a slick armbar/triangle choke combination over Jacob Volkmann in the first round. Former WEC champ Mike Brown returned to vintage form with a unanimous decision over Daniel Pineda.

Demetrious Johnson beats McCall, gets shot at UFC?s inaugural flyweight belt
Demetrious Johnson took care of unfinished business at UFC on FX 3 in Fort Lauderdale on Friday night.
Johnson took the lead early by dropping McCall with a right hand halfway through the first round. McCall continually moved forward towards Johnson, but couldn't always land strikes when he did. Throughout the bout, Johnson's conditioning and footwork gave him an edge. He was able to move in and move out to land strikes, frustrating McCall throughout.
There was no scoring error this time as Johnson was announced the winner via unanimous decision. The judges gave it to Johnson 29-28, 30-27 and 29-28.
"It's about using my athletic ability and letting my mind go free," Johnson said about his performance.
The fight was a rematch after their March bout that ended in a draw. That fight didn't go to a fourth round to decide who would advance in the tournament because an incorrect score was announced.
The judges made a definitive, and correct, decision on Friday night. Johnson's win means he'll fight Joe Benavidez for the UFC's first flyweight championship.
