Canadian promotion MFC tells title holders: Blow weight? You?re losing your belt
Canadian promotion Maximum Fighting Championship is making some changes in the way they are handling title fights. MFC's titleholders will vacate their belt if they don't make weight for title fights.
At MFC 34 in August, Adam Lynn was set to meet Mukai Maromo for the vacant lightweight title. Lynn weighed in at 156.6 lbs., a pound and a half over the limit of 155 lbs. Maromo went on to to win the fight by knockout. Because of Lynn's blown weight, the fight was changed to non-title status, so Maromo didn't win the belt.
Under the new system, MFC champions will lose their title if they blow weight. If they win their fight, they will be considered the No. 1 contender to win back their belt. If they lose the fight, the contender wins the belt. If the contender blows weight, the champion will keep the belt, regardless of the fight's outcome.
The change in policy was put in place so that fighters won't be penalized because their opponents don't make weight. Fighters not making weight doesn't happen all that often at the top levels of the sport. However, it makes sense to have a policy in place in case there is a problem. The people at US Track and Field found out the hard way that policies for rare occasions, like a tie for third place at an Olympic Trials, are still needed.
In the UFC, when fighters don't make weight in a title fight, the title is no longer on the line. Travis Lutter didn't make weight against Anderson Silva for their fight in 2007, so the fight was not a title defense for Silva. Would you like to see UFC go to this system? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Jon Jones finds himself in a war of words with Chael Sonnen
Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen got into a war of words on Wednesday that showed a glimpse of the future if Sonnen can find his way to another title shot.
It started with Sonnen being Sonnen on "UFC Tonight." When discussing his move up to light heavyweight to face Forrest Griffin, Sonnen says he could easily take the belt away from the champion.
With his bout with Dan Henderson just weeks away, Jones would pay no mind to what Sonnen said, right? Because it's clear this is classic Chael Shtick (trademark pending), and there is no reason for Jones to even respond.
Except:
"The things you say about me hold absolutely no weight," Jones wrote on Twitter. "You disrespected Anderson (Silva) and his country but fought like a child.
"If you're going to disrespect me out of nowhere, at least disrespect me to my face like a man. And you call me a punk, I'm more man than you'll ever be."
Though Jones' tweets have been deleted, Sonnen's responses have not been. He mentioned both Jones' recent DUI and his new deal with Nike.
Advice to @jonnybones. Take some of that Nike money, hire new writers.

? chael sonnen (@sonnench) August 15, 2012
Jones' response? He is just manipulating Sonnen.
For everyone who thinks I'm "falling into chaels game" I know exactly what I'm doing.. #AreYouNotEntertained
? Jon Bones Jones (@JonnyBones) August 15, 2012
As a fighter, Jones has yet to find his equal. He continues to improve with each fight, and has proven he has a hold on his division. But Jones is nowhere near Sonnen's level when it comes to trash talk. No fighter is.
If Sonnen is so far behind Jones as a mixed martial artist, why give him the satisfaction of turning and looking back? It's odd to see a fighter engage in a trash talk war with another fighter when his own fight is so close.

Dana White has some choice words about Roy Nelson as TUF premieres on Friday (VIDEO)
Considering there are no major MMA fights this weekend, it's been a full week of news. UFC 153 was completely rearranged, which is overshadowing the start of another season of "The Ultimate Fighter" on Friday nights.
Heavyweights Roy Nelson and Shane Carwin will coach this season, but word is that Nelson and UFC president Dana White battle more than Nelson and Carwin. White sat down with Yahoo! Sports and talked about his thoughts on Nelson.
"Everything that comes out of his mouth is just ... asinine. I'm worried that at the end of the season, people are going to want to see me fight Roy Nelson instead of Shane Carwin."
White also had choice comments on how Nelson's appearance affects his sponsorships. He said he advised Nelson to cut his mullet, shave his beard, and work on the belly Nelson has become known for.
"He focuses on all the wrong things. You know what I consider him? The ultimate underachiever. Come into my office and [expletive]. 'I want more sponsors.' Well, you got a mullet down to the middle of your back. You got a Santa Claus beard, and what pops out from underneath the beard is this huge, massive roll. What company wants to throw their logo on that?"
He wants to see Nelson take his career more seriously.
"Take your career serious. Maybe if you took your career serious, I would. The guy could be really good if he cared."
Do you agree with White on Nelson, or should he just lighten up on the fighter? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or Twitter.

Randy Couture isn?t planning a return to the cage, unless Steven Seagal gets in first
You will be disappointed if you want to see UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture fight again. He is focused on his movie career, and recently told me he is starting to feel more like an actor and less like a professional athlete.
"I still feel like a professional athlete. That's slowly, I think, changing. I'm starting to get recognized for my movies. Hopefully, being considered by the industry as a bona fide actor. That's a transition I'm embracing."
But there just may be one challenge who could bring Couture back to the cage. On G4's "Attack of the Show," he said:
"Not unless (Steven) Seagal wants to sign up," Couture answered with a smile and a laugh.
Though Couture was joking, oh please oh please oh please can this happen? Seagal claims to have taught Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida some of their best moves. In fact, he claimed the kick Machida used to knock out Couture in his last fight. In a cage with Couture, Seagal would have to back up everything he's said about teaching some of MMA's best fighters.
Plus, it would be one heck of a way to sell a movie.

Matchmaker, matchmaker: What happened to the UFC 151 bouts, and Sarah Kaufman?s next bout
With UFC 151's cancellation, the UFC had to do a ton of scrambling to move the fights that didn't involve Dan Henderson or Jon Jones to other fight cards.
-- Kyle Noke and Charlie Brenneman's fight was moved to UFC 152 after Dan Miller's fight with Sean Pierson was canceled for a really good reason. Miller's son will finally get a kidney transplant in mid-September.
-- Several UFC 151 fights were shifted to UFC on FX 5. Dennis Hallman vs. Thiago Tavares, Danny Castillo vs. Michael Johnson, Shane Roller vs. Jacob Volkmann was all moved to the October 5 fights in Minneapolis.
-- Takeya Mizugaki's bout with Jeff Hoaglund and Yasuhiro Urushitani's fight with Jeff Lineker will move to UFC on Fuel in 6, which is taking place on Nov. 10 in Macau.
-- Alan Belcher's injury and Vitor Belfort's fight with Jon Jones forces their fight off of UFC 153. Phil Davis' bout with Wagner Prado was promoted to the main card.
-- In non-UFC fight booking news, former Strikeforce bantamweight champion Sarah Kaufman will fight Kaitlin Young at Invicta's next bouts on October 6. Kaufman's fight will be a one-time deal for her to fight on Invicta's all-female card.
Wednesday
Jon Jones will now fight Vitor Belfort at UFC 152
Remember how on that long ago, far away day of yesterday we heard UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones would face Lyoto Machida at UFC 152 instead of Dan Henderson at UFC 151? Hope you didn't start etching that fight card into stone, because MMA Junkie is reporting Jones will now face Vitor Belfort at UFC 152.
So in the past 24 hours:
1. Henderson had to pull out of the title bout with Jones. Though Jones was offered Chael Sonnen and Chris Weidman as late replacements, he turned them down and UFC 151 was canceled.
2. Instead, a rematch between Machida and Jones was scheduled. Their last bout was in December in Toronto, and Jones won by guillotine.
3. Machida turned down the fight. Considering his last fight was on Aug. 4, you could see why he wouldn't want to take on a five-round, championship fight on less than a month's notice.
4. Vitor Belfort, who was scheduled to fight Alan Belcher at UFC 153, will now move up to light heavyweight and fight Jones for the title at 152.
Got all that? Just be happy you're not responsible for continually redesigning the UFC's event posters.
Vitali Klitschko retains WBC title due to doctor?s stoppage
41-year old heavyweight icon Vitali Klitschko continued to show he hasn?t skipped a beat after picking up his ninth straight win since taking a four-year break from boxing. The success came in a bout against Manuel Charr after Klitschko opened up a cut over his German adversary?s eye that continued to bleed profusely to the point the ringside physician stepped in to wave the fight off.
The victory improved Klitschko?s overall record to 45-2 and was his 41st win by way of TKO. He is 18-1 in his last nineteen fights including success in his previous thirteen tilts.
Klitschko: “40 Isn’t Too Old…”
After the match-up Charr asked Klitschko for a rematch in hopes the two could settle the score without a cut ending things. However, Klitschko apparently wasn?t interested in the possibility.
”I understand your big desire to face [me] again, but you know that so many boxers would like do it and if we meet so often we won’t give a chance for the others,” said Klitschko to the Associated Press.
Klitschko also added that he wasn’t sure what was next for him, though he acknowledged he likely wouldn’t be fighting for too much longer given his age and responsibilities to a Ukranian political party.

Jon Jones reportedly asked Dana White to tell Chael Sonnen to stop calling him out
Before UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones turned down a fight with Chael Sonnen, the two engaged in a war of words. Sonnen called Jones out, Jones responded with, "If you're going to disrespect me out of nowhere, at least disrespect me to my face like a man. And you call me a punk, I'm more man than you'll ever be," and then Jones said he knew what he was doing all along.
Except, there are reports now that Jones was bothered by Sonnen not only calling out Jones here, but in the many things Sonnen said after Jones turned down their fights. He even reportedly asked UFC president Dana White to tell Sonnen to stop.
This isn't the first time Jones has been oddly bothered by what people have to say about him. After beating Quinton Jackson at UFC 135, the UFC brought Rashad Evans into the cage for the two to face off for their next fight. Jones was so bothered by the sight of his former friend in the cage that he ignored Evans' compliments on how he fought, and said Evans "ruined his night twice." Really? Jones had just beaten a former champion by submission, but the mere sight of Evans ruined what should have been a jubilant evening for him.
When Jones apologized for getting behind the wheel of a car while drunk, he lashed out again at his "haters" who tried to "kick him while he was down." After White announced the cancellation of UFC 151 and lashed out against Jones and his camp, Jones actually unfollowed his boss on Twitter.
For a millionaire professional athlete, Jones has a thin skin. He often appears more concerned with what his detractors think than his supporters.
It's an odd stance for someone of his level to take, because part of the job of being a famous athlete is dealing with people who don't like you. Look at the mentions of Twitter pages or Facebook pages for any pro athlete. They are being blamed for everything from fantasy team losses to ruining a fan's life. San Francisco 49er Kyle Williams received death threats after fumbling in a playoff game. It's not right that anyone should have to deal with such vitriol, but it's part of the fame game.
Jones has the skills, speed, reach, height and fight intelligence to stay at the top of the MMA world for a long, long time. He appears so far above his competition that the only person who can beat him is Jon Jones. Right now, he should be thinking about his fight with Vitor Belfort on Sept. 22, not be worried about what Sonnen has to say.
Wanderlei Silva, Sarah Kaufman, Tyrone Mims: The Morning News Roundup ? 8.13.12
One fighter should be riding off into the sunset, one fighter has the biggest fight of her career coming up, and one fighter was taken from us too soon. It's a mixed bag of news in today's roundup, so come, grab your cup of joe (or java, or mud, or whatever it is you coffee drinkers imbibe) and join me. I brought bagels!
- UFC president Dana White says that Wanderlei Silva ? the legendary Brazilian fighter and PRIDE FC champ ? will fight again. Hooray? I guess? Look, I love the "Axe Murderer" as much as the next guy, and watching some of his old fights is akin to watching a snuff film where the participants wear four-ounce gloves and fight shorts. But it's an undeniable fact that the man has gotten old and is nowhere near the killer he once was. Remember what happened when he fought Quinton Jackson? Or Chris Leben? I don't want to see something like that again. Do you? I say give him an executive position in the UFC's Brazil office and let him smile and shake hands and stuff.

- Female bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey is headlining a Strikeforce this weekend, and of course you're going to be inundated with all sorts of things pertaining to her (she is the "new" face of women's MMA, after all). So, for the sake of balance and yin and yang and whatnot, here's some Sarah Kaufman stuff. She is challenging Rousey for her belt, you know.

- As I hinted at yesterday, a fighter died at an amateur MMA event in South Carolina on Saturday night. His name was Tyrone Mims. This was Mims' first fight, and it was fully-sanctioned and under the auspices of South Carolina State Athletic Commission. The cause of death won't be known until an autopsy is performed (one is scheduled), but according to onsite accounts, it didn't appear as if Mims took an inordinate amount of damage in his bout, which has led to speculation that a pre-existing condition could've been a contributing factor. What sort of medical screening do amateur fighters go through? It varies by state ? in New York or South Dakota, a person can step into the cage after signing a waiver and maybe getting a quick look-over by a doctor, while in South Carolina you need the standard bloodwork done (HIV, Hepatitis B and C), an eye exam and the thumbs-up from a physician. Regardless of what pre-fight screening Mims went through, though, it's still a tragedy that he lost his life. He stepped into the cage and took part in a sport we all love; let's honor him by never forgetting and by striving to make our sport better.

That's all for now. Today's the last day of my temp gig here at Cagewriter, but you can expect at least one more post from me, so you can post your parting insults there.

Demetrious Johnson: ?Winning the UFC flyweight title means everything to me.?
Flyweight Demetrious Johnson didn?t always dream of being a UFC champion. In fact, he never even contemplated a career in MMA until being drawn in by what he witnessed on the Ultimate Fighter. ?Mighty Mouse? has since emerged as one of the most talented competitors in the sport, blending polished technique and a wrestling base with an uncanny quickness.
Johnson will get a chance to prove himself in historic fashion in a week when he faces Joseph Benavidez for the UFC?s inaugural flyweight title, a prize he?s sacrificed a lot for over the past few years.
?Winning the UFC flyweight title means everything to me. I first walked into (trainer) Matt Hume?s gym after catching an episode of the Ultimate Fighter, the season with Rashad Evans in it and wanted to be UFC champion,? explained Johnson in an interview with the UFC, admitting he didn?t even know the company didn?t have a weight-class for athletes his size.
Johnson Out to See How Bad Benavidez Wants the Title
While Johnson is currently fighting as a 125-pounder, the 26-year old also excelled at 135 pounds where he challenged for the championship but ultimately came up short. Still, with some more time, Johnson is confident he could hold titles in two divisions starting with the flyweight belt.
?I think I could have won the bantamweight title, but 125 pounds is where my body performs best and I think, as a flyweight, I have the chance to do some really cool things,? said Johnson, adding, ?Being at 125 pounds, I think I?m the fastest fighter in the UFC.
The bout between Benavidez and Johnson will serve as the co-headliner at UFC 152. The 15-2-1 Johnson earned his spot in the title-fight by beating Ian McCall, while Benavidez?s knockout of Yasuhiro Urushitani did the same trick while also improving his overall record to 16-2.

TweetWhat does a fighter look like? (PHOTOS)
I've often heard the phrase, "He/she doesn't look like a fighter!" This comes up especially before women's fights, when Ronda Rousey's cover girl looks are cited as a reason to be shocked that she can rip your arm off. I hear it about Georges St-Pierre, who could easily find another career on a runway. UFC president Dana White brought it up recently when he criticized Roy Nelson's mullet, beard and belly.
But the thing about MMA is that outside making weight the day before a fight and passing a ton of medical tests, there are no physical requirements to step in a cage. While fighters look like this:
They also look like this:
They come in sizes large:
and small:
They are from all over the world and represent every color in the rainbow.
And yes, Dana, sometimes they even look like this.
There is no one way to look, act or sound like a fighter. The diversity within mixed martial arts is something to be celebrated, not criticized.

Firas Zahabi cautiously optimistic about Georges St-Pierre?s return to the ring
The MMA world was able to breathe a sigh of relief last month when UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre announced he had been given a clean bill of health from his doctors and was able to resume training at full speed. While GSP?s coaching guru, Firas Zahabi, also greeted the news with a smile it appears to have been one with clenched teeth.
Zahabi recently expressed his opinion on St-Pierre?s return, slated for November 17 at UFC 154 against interim title-holder Carlos Condit, and explained he had some reservations about ?Rush? coming back so soon.
?I would have preferred, obviously, if he could have waited a little longer. I think it would have been the best, more ideal, but Georges really wanted to fight. The fans wanted to see him fight. The fight?s coming to Montreal,? said Zahabi in an interview with Sherdog Radio. ?I told Georges, ?Let?s do one last sparring. Let?s see where you?re at in sparring.? And he did great. He went all his rounds. He went with every UFC fighter. He looked fantastic, and we said, ?Look, you?re ready. Let?s do it.??
?The only reason I said I would have liked to wait longer is because I wouldn?t want to rush the healing process, not that we did, but we really did it right on the deadline,? the respected trainer elaborated.
St-Pierre Out to Finish Condit to Prove Critics Wrong
The 22-2 St-Pierre is coming off an eighteen-month layoff after a pair of knee injuries, the most serious of which involved a torn ACL. Prior to the situation he had racked up nine straight wins including six title-defenses.

TweetDennis Bermudez is Unstoppable: The UFC 150 Preliminary Card Rundown
It was a record-setting preliminary card for UFC 150, with history made in the speed and ferocity with which leather was thrown. In the bantamweight division, a Greg Jackson-trained fighter won big, while an Octagon newcomer dominated. And in the featherweight division, a TUF 14 star shined, while a former lightweight found that he should've been fighting other 145-pounders all along.
[Related: Erik Perez scores fastest KO in bantamweight history]
- In the first fight of the evening, Japanese veteran Eiji Mitsuoka and Nik Lentz met in the cage for a featherweight contest that saw the American dominate Mitsuoka with wrestling from beginning to end. In his first fight at 145 pounds, Lentz was strong ? way stronger than his opponent ? and Mitsuoka had no answer for the takedowns and throws that put him on the mat. The end came when Lentz maneuvered onto Mitsuoka's back, flattened him out, and unloaded a barrage of fists that forced the referee to step in at 3:45 of Round One.
- It was all about momentum in the bantamweight pairing between TUF 14 veteran Dustin Pague and Octagon rookie Chico Camus, and though Pague was dangerous early on with a first-round triangle choke that his foe had to work to avoid, Camus slowly but surely gathered steam with escapes and ground and pound. This went on for all three rounds, and by the time the clock was ticking down to zero, Camus was in mount and back-mount and Pague was completely on the defensive. Camus took the well-earned unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-28).
- Bantamweight fireball Erik Perez walked right through Ken Stone, striding boldly into their first and only exchange and dropping Stone with a right hook that had the Massachusetts-born fighter eating canvas. Perez followed him down and kept punching, and when Stone went rigid referee Herb Dean jumped in. Stone was so dazed that when Perez relented and turned away, he tried to keep fighting, and Dean had to physically restrain him while Perez celebrated. At a mere 17 seconds, Perez was the owner of the fastest knockout (a TKO) in WEC and UFC bantamweight history.
- Dutch judoka Michael Kuiper absolutely brutalized kickboxer Jared Hamman, even though his game plan seemed to involve a lot of strolling forward eating kicks and punches. Fleet-footed and mobile, Hamman began strong. But Kuiper buckled him with a leg-kick that seemed to incur lasting damage, and then came the punches that chipped away and chipped away until Hamman came to resemble an extra in "The Walking Dead". The end came via TKO at 2:16 in Round Two, when Kuiper cracked Hamman and Hamman fell in a heap.
- Things looked dire for Dennis Bermudez when Tommy Hayden nailed him with a knee and sent him stunned to the canvas, but the TUF 14 runner-up is apparently made of iron. Recovering from the knee to the dome and then forced to wiggle out of a rear naked choke and slam his way out of an armbar attempt, Bermudez just couldn't be stopped, and he paid Hayden back with a crushing front kick to the chest and standing guillotine choke. Hayden tapped out at 4:43 of the first round.

Good news: Dan Miller?s son received a new kidney
UFC fighter Dan Miller has been on a long quest to find health for his son, Danny, who was born with kidney problems that required near constant dialysis. Finally, Danny has kidney function after a kidney transplant on Thursday.
Dan's brother, UFC fighter Jim Miller, shared the good news.
The word is that everything has gone well with my nephew's transplant. Both Danny and my Aunt came out strong. TY everyone for the support

Danny's kidney transplant was made possible in part by support of the MMA community. When insurance wouldn't pay for the transplant, Miller's fight gym held fundraisers. Jim gave the proceeds from his UFC on Fox 3 walkout shirt to his nephew's cause. Cage Potato designed and sold shirts, too.
Now, we get to see the happy ending to the story. Danny finally has kidney function.
The Alistair Overeem doll sure has bulked up
Round 5 released its latest round of UFC dolls/action figures/toys meant for kids but likely bought by grown men. It includes a Chael Sonnen, Anderson Silva, Lyoto Machida, Dominick Cruz, and two different Alistair Overeems that don't remotely resemble each other.
The Overeem on the left in blue gloves is supposed to represent the former Strikeforce heavyweight champion's PRIDE days. The one on the right is supposed to be him in his one fight in the UFC before he was suspended by the Nevada Athletic Commission for elevated testosterone.
Overeem fought for PRIDE from 2002-2007, and moved between light heavyweight and middleweight with a few heavyweight bouts sprinkled in. He was leaner then, but also less successful, losing at light heavyweight to Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, Ricardo Arona and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. Since moving to heavyweight permanently in 2007, he has one loss and one no contest. Putting on weight has clearly worked for him, but the dolls are one more reminder of how much muscle he has put on since fighting.
The horse meat he credits with his weight gain sure does a (doll) body good.
