Ronda Rousey: ?On the ground there?s no hope for (Sarah Kaufman).?

It?s no secret Strikeforce bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey is a monster on the mat. An Olympic medalist in judo, the unbeaten Rousey has finished all of her opponents in the opening round by way of Armbar. And, when it comes to her upcoming title-defense against Sarah Kaufman this Saturday night, Rousey appears confident in her ability to do the same to the 15-1 Canadian.

?I refuse to lose this fight. I have somebody in front of me that?s trying to take something from me and I?m very possessive when it comes to my accessories these days,? said Rousey in the latest All-Access feature from Showtime.

All-Access Episode One

?Once she?s on the ground she?s in my world. On the ground there?s no hope for her,? the 25-year old added. ?The first time I get my hands on her she?s going down. The first time she hits that canvas she?s getting tapped out.?

Rousey-Kaufman will face off in the main event this weekend on Showtime. The main card fires up at 10:05 PM EST with other bouts including Miesha Tate-Julie Kedzie and Derek Brunson-Ronaldo Souza.

Ronda Rousey pokes fun at herself in video message to Sarah Kaufman

When Strikeforce bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey enters the ring this weekend to defend her title against former divisional queen Sarah Kaufman she?ll undoubtedly have her game-face on. However, this past Saturday night ?Rowdy Ronda? decided to keep things far less serious in relation to Kaufman during a video message she taped responding to an online challenge the top contender made to her fans on Twitter.

Kaufman went on the social networking site to offer up a pair of tickets to her bout with Rousey for the best impersonation of the outspoken Olympic medalist. Though obviously not in need of access to the event, Rousey took advantage of the opportunity by making fun of herself under the name ?Ronda Roozie? where she wished Kaufman luck in the upcoming clash.

Kaufman Wants to Be Known for Fighting, Nothing More

?You?re totally gonna knock her out. She needs to be knocked out. I mean, why would she want to get a title-shot as quick as possible when she had a bunch of sh*tty jobs? She should just sit around and still work a sh*tty job and wait for her turn like the best of us,? mocked Rousey. ?Just knock that girl out. She sucks!?

?She thinks she?s awesome and you need to remind her that she?s not. She?s not cool and she?s not pretty. Punch her in the boob,? she continued, pointing to a strike Kaufman landed in her previous bout.

Rousey is unlikely to tell any jokes when she and Kaufman come face-to-face in five days. The unbeaten champion has finished all of the opponents she?s faced thus far by way of opening round submission, while Kaufman is 15-1 and on a three-fight winning streak.

NAC not planning to offer Alistair Overeem an early license

It looks like the talk surrounding a possible match-up on December 29 between UFC heavyweight champ Junior dos Santos and controversial challenger Alistair Overeem has all been for naught, as the Nevada Athletic Commission?s executive officer has spoken out to make it clear the devastating Dutchman is not in line to be licensed before December 27.

Overeem is currently ineligible for a license due to a drug test earlier this year revealing a high T:E ratio stemming from testosterone use. Recently he announced he was undergoing random screenings to establish trust from the NAC and hoped to be granted a conditional license in order to fight Dos Santos at the UFC?s annual year-end event.

?I see no way to do that. I know of none,” explained Keith Kizer of Overeem’s intended result in an interview with MMAFighting. “But even if the commission had some discretion to grant some waiver of time, I personally don’t see this as the case. I’d be against that. There is some discretion at the commission level, but I don’t think this is the case to use that discretion. This is not just a guy who engaged in cheating, but a guy who ran out the front door when the testing was being done.”

Overeem Explains His Plan to Get Licensed Sooner than Later

Though chalked up by Overeem as a miscommunication, ?The Demolition Man? is alleged to have left the premises in March when he and a group of other heavyweights set to compete were told they were being randomly drug tested.

The heavy-handed Overeem also recently stated he was set to meet with the NAC later this month to update them and inquire about his status, though Kizer denied any knowledge of the matter, saying, ?That must be wishful thinking.?

For now, with Overeem unlikely to be ready by the end of 2012, it appears Cain Velasquez will indeed get the next title-shot as promised in May when he beat Antonio Silva.

Jon Jones Blasts ?Coward? and ?Cheater? Chael Sonnen in Twitter Tirade

Chael Sonnen certainly has a knack for irking UFC champions. After bringing middleweight king Anderson Silva to a boiling point, Uncle Chael has now decided to antagonize 205-pound champ Jon Jones (Pictured). In Wednesday’s edition of The New York Post, Sonnen predicted Dan Henderson would steamroll “Bones” on September 1st and take his crown. After [...]

Lyoto Machida focused on potential rematch with Jon Jones

Even though UFC light heavyweight Lyoto Machida hasn?t gone on record with a pick in the upcoming bout between divisional champion Jon Jones and challenger Dan Henderson, the 205-pound top contender seems to be leaning in one direction based on some recent comments pointing to a possible meeting with the man currently wearing the belt.

Machida and Jones faced off this past December with Jones retaining his belt after an evenly-matched first round was followed up by a submission finish in the second. Now it seems Machida may want some revenge.

According to Machida, while he has the upmost respect for Jones, he already has a few areas in mind to work on when it comes to being the first man to legitimately beat ?Bones? en route to reclaiming the championship he once wore himself.

?I beat him in the first round, but Jones is a great athlete and fighter. He changes his style all the time. He has a good coach and good strategy, but I think I have a chance to beat him,? explained Machida in an interview with MMAJunkie Radio. ?He has good wrestling, and his reach is very long. I have to train a lot on how to get inside, and how I can beat him. He’s very tough. He can control the fight when he uses his wrestling. That’s why I have to train more wrestling, and more defense.?

However, if Jones comes up short against Henderson it appears Machida is equally open to mixing it up with the first-ballot Hall of Fame fighter, saying simply, ?I just want to be a champion again. It doesn’t matter who my opponent is.?

“Hendo” Likes Idea of Match-Up with Machida

Jones-Henderson are scheduled to serve as the main event at UFC 151 on September 1. Based on the date it seems likely the winner will face Machida before the end of the year, health-permitting.

Donald Cerrone plans to put on a show against Melvin Guillard at UFC 150

One of the many mentalities possessed by fighters that fans have a hard time understanding is their ability to exchange blows with an adversary in an attempt to incapacitate him/her and still end up hugging respectfully after the rumble. Though some competitors have a difficult time separating business issues from personal ones, UFC lightweights Donald Cerrone and Melvin Guillard are not among them as they plan to prove this Saturday night in co-headlining action at UFC 150.

Guillard and Cerrone trained together for years at Jackson?s MMA in New Mexico though ?The Young Assassin? now calls the Blackzilian camp his home. Still, the two still consider themselves friends to this day. However, when the cage door closes in Denver this week they plan on going as hard as possibly until one man falls.

?Is the friendship going to conflict with the fight? Absolutely not. Ya?ll wanna see fireworks, it?s going down,? said Cerrone in an interview with the UFC. ?I?m going (there) to win. So is he. So it?s not like I?m gonna hit him less because I know him, we trained together. I?m gonna hit him more because I know where he?s weak.?

Guillard Expecting War with “Cowboy” Cerrone

?I am honored Melvin stepped up. He could have said ?We trained together, we?ve sparred, he knows my style, it is in his hometown?? but he stepped up right away. He?s a warrior. He?s a man,? praised Cerrone of his friend-turned-temporary-foe, adding, ?When I heard he?d stepped up I called him up to thank him. I was like ?Thanks for being a warrior and letting me have this fight that I wanted so bad?.?

Cerrone and Guillard are both coming off decision victories after having impressive winning streaks snapped. Each is a noted finisher of foes with Cerrone owning fourteen stoppages in eighteen total instances of success and Guillard with 21 in 30.

Tales from the Training Room: The 24-Hour Lock-In

Two weekends ago, New Jersey-based pro fighter Anthony Montanaro was stuck in hell. He and over twenty other people were confined to the matted-space within the four walls of a massive gym, and every hour for twenty-four hours straight, all were subjected to workouts of varying length and composition. There were seven-minute wrestling matches. Rope climbs. Box jumps and pull-ups. The works. No sleep was allowed, and men broke, both physically and mentally. Yet, despite being driven to the brink of madness, Montanaro pushed through, and when the last workout was done and they were all permitted to leave, he was stronger because if it. Such was the magic of the 24-hour lock-in.

"A 24-hour lock-in is your worst nightmare amplified by ten," says the 25-year-old Montanaro, who, with a shaved head and the tattoo of an armored pitbull on a chest, looks every bit the MMA fighter archetype. "It's twenty-four hours straight of nonstop training, where every hour on the hour you have a different workout that could be five minutes to a half-hour long. The whole purpose is to break you, to make you hit the wall as soon as possible. It's all mental toughness. It's a nightmare."

The Rhino Wrestling Club in Morganville, N.J., was where this nightmare unfolded; the day began Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. and went until 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning. It was rigorous, with the intense physical activity and sleep-deprivation aspects making it more akin to what a soldier would do for Special Forces training than anything else. "I don't know if they stole the idea from Navy SEAL-type stuff, but it was ridiculous," says Montanaro. "It was kind of like the whole Marine or Army crucible-type stuff, know what I mean?"

To prepare for fights, fighters go to great lengths to make themselves like steel. There's roadwork, padwork, grappling, and as we've seen on "The Ultimate Fighter", conditioning drills that can involve things like flipping giant tires and swinging sledgehammers. With a fight coming up in the next few months, Montanaro is no different. But what benefits are derived from the lock-in? Clearly, the limits of the conditioning of the participants are pushed, but is there something more?

"Honestly, just complete mental toughness," says Montanaro. "You get to a point where you don't think you can go anymore and then you have to go. It's insane. It's probably the worst training I've ever done. I was more nervous for that than any fight I've ever had to do."

What of the necessities of human existence? "They have a bathroom, of course," says Montanaro. "Food's included? all the food you can eat. After your workouts, even if you weren't hungry, they stressed that you drink and eat nonstop ? just carb you up and keep you going. Sleep, that's not encouraged at all. They keep you awake, keep you zombified, keep you going."

Obviously, the whole endeavor was tortuous. Was there any particular thing that Montanaro found to be the toughest? "The toughest thing about the lock-in? Where do I even start? The whole damn thing. Once you hit that first wall, that's when it's brutal. Everything hits you all at once ? you want to sleep, you try to lay down and it's time for the next workout. I would say around two or three in the morning, that's when it's the worst. You know you could just leave at any point you want, but it's just that whole mental aspect."

If one could literally leave at any time, it sounds as if the name ? a "lock-in" ? is a bit of a misnomer. "It was going to be a complete lock-in, but it was so damn hot, there was no way they could do something like that. We would've kicked the doors down. There was no way."

With door unlocked and retreat requiring only an exit through the door, did anyone quit? "No, surprisingly enough, no one quit. And the craziest thing was there was an 11-year old kid there. Some parent signed their kid up to do it! It was the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. So anytime someone wanted to quit, we'd look at this little kid. He was our mascot."

What was the atmosphere like? Was it all business, or was there at least some of element of fun to it? "For the first probably like eight to ten hours, everyone was kind of feeling each other out ? you know, like, is everyone in full serious-mode or are we going to have some kind offun here? Probably at night is when everyone started to get a little loopy. Everyone started to get punchy. The later it got into the night, everyone was just out there."

Would Montanaro go through it all again? "Absolutely," he says without hesitation. "In a heartbeat. After it was done, I honestly just wanted to stay and keep going. It's just nonstop training, no drama, no [expletive], everyone was just there to train. If we could do it, I would love to do it every month."

A wise man once posed the question, "Do you want to be a [expletive] fighter?" It's doubtful he'd dare ask that of Montanaro and participants of the 24-hour lock-in.

Ronda Rousey admits insecurities in All-Access look at champion?s life

Fans only familiar with Strikeforce bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey through her in-ring antics or tough-talk outside of it might paint her as little more than a ferocious competitor with ice-water running through her veins. However, while Rousey is certainly an elite athlete with a burning desire to be the best, she?s also a thoughtful, emotionally-connected individual who hasn?t always had it easy.

Rousey showed a different side of herself recently in an All-Access special from Showtime focused on the build towards her fight with Sarah Kaufman on August 18.

?People don?t realize how bad my body issues were when I was a kid. I wore baggy clothes every day. There were days where I would like at myself in the mirror and cry, just looking at myself,? admitted Rousey while preparing for her photo-shoot with ESPN the Magazine?s Body Issue. ?It?s just stupid the way that women, especially in this country, are conditioned to hate how they look so they buy sh*t.?

Rousey Unapologetic About Attitude

The complete feature airs tomorrow night on showtime.

Lyoto Machida, Chad Mendes, Matt Hamill: The Morning News Roundup ? 8.4.12

It's fight day! Which means while you and I are gathering provisions for tonight's UFC on FOX 4 ? you know, things like avocados for fresh guacamole, cases of TAB soda and Kleenex for the tears that are sure to come ? there are twenty fighters in a hotel in Los Angeles milling about with butterflies in their stomachs, anxious to punch each other in the face. Hooray! But despite the violence that's impending on Fuel TV (the preliminary bouts start at 5:00 p.m. EST) and FOX (main card at 8:00 p.m. EST), the news cycle trudges on. Here, then, are some headlines.

  • Although he's fighting in the 205-pound weight class tonight in the co-main event, the simple fact that former UFC light-heavyweight champ Lyoto Machida stepped on the scale at 201 pounds has got people speculating he could move down to the 185-pound division. My personal policy is to never fix something that isn't broke, but hey, what do I know.

  • When last we saw UFC featherweight contender Chad Mendes, he was squashing Cody McKenzie like a bug at UFC 148. When the police last saw Mendes, he was fleeing a 40-person bar fight. Yikes. A 40-person bar fight? See, this is why I only hang out at Chuck E. Cheese. When little kids brawl, it's harmless.

  • Fellow scribe Kevin Iole reported yesterday that UFC light-heavyweight Matt Hamill has decided to fight again. Awesome. And let's not forget, Hamill is the only person to ever defeat UFC champ Jon Jones, so be excited for that future match-up.

That's all for now. I'll be tweeting my observations of the fights tonight as they happen. Follow along if you want. A word of caution, though: as a devout Native American, I'll be undertaking a cleansing ritual at the same time (they're wheeling a TV into the sweat lodge) ? but I'll try to keep the hallucinatory stuff under control.
