Georges St. Pierre to make announcement at press conference Friday

According to the Journal de Montreal, UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre will convene a press conference this Friday with local media to make an announcement. The long-time champion made waves when he announced that he was stepping away from MMA after being awarded a controversial split decision win over Johny Hendricks in their UFC 167 main event bout last month.

Since that time, St. Pierre's coaches, mentor, teammates, rivals and bosses have all speculated as to whether the 32 year old will indeed retire, take a leave of absence or immediately get back into action. The fighter himself, however, has been mostly silent.

That should change at Friday's press conference. What do you think St. Pierre will announce? Let us know in the comments section.

Robbie Lawler beats Rory MacDonald, steps into UFC welterweight title contender role

Robbie Lawler was as good as advertised Saturday night, making his welterweight match up against Rory MacDonald knock down, drag out scrap and winning a split decision at UFC 167. From the onset, Lawler was the aggressor, throwing and landing more strikes in a close first round.

In the second, MacDonald continued to bide his time, apparently looking for opportunities to counter or get a take down. With less than two minutes left, MacDonald turned the second round in his favor with a take down.

Lawler made a statement in the third and final round, however, knocking "Aries" down twice with punches. MacDonald refused to give up and ended the round with another take down and elbows landed to Lawler's head from on top inside the half-guard of "Ruthless".

The late surge was not enough for MacDonald in the eyes of two of the ringside judges, however, and they scored the fight for Lawler. Lawler has now won three straight fights since returning to the UFC - second straight over a top-ten opponent - and very well could find himself fighting for the welterweight title soon.

Fighter drug tests come back clean from UFC 167

Heading into UFC 167, drug testing was a hot topic thanks to an incoherent series of spats, negotiations and thinly veiled allegations between welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre and challenger Johny Hendricks. In the end, they and every other fighter that competed on the UFC 167 card were tested by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC).

Today, NSAC executive director Keith Kizer told Cagewriter via email that all 24 post-fight fighter tests from UFC 167 have come back clean. the NSAC tests for a host of performance-enhancing and recreational substances as well as some banned over the counter products.

We're sure this won't stop the ceaseless speculation around the sport's top fighters for long but it may quiet the the hubub for at least a short while. We suppose there's plenty controversy from the main event's decision and fall-out from St. Pierre's vague post-fight announcement to take everyone's attention away from drugs for a bit.
