Watch the Best of MFC 39

Long-running Canadian promotion Maximum Fighting Championship had their 39th show last night, which aired on AXS-TV and saw some pretty solid action up and down the card. Worth noting is the result in the Tom Gallicchio/Kurt Southern fight (Gallicchio was profiled by FiveOunces’ sister site FightLine); Gallicchio won via submission in the second round, but […]

UFC fighter Wanderlei Silva to run for Brazilian congress

Wanderlei Silva plans to begin a campaign for congress in his native Brazil after fighting Chael Sonnen this year, according to a press release from the MMA legend. According to a report from Guilherme Cruz of MMA Fighting, Silva is affiliated with the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB) in Parana, Brazil.

Beating up the Brazil-knocking Sonnen is actually a part of Silva's campaign, thus far.

"I?ll go to the TUF house, knock Sonnen out and then start my campaign," the release said.

"The Axe Murderer" said that he has many social projects in mind and is tired of waiting on others to complete them. He has already opened up a free gym, the type of which he spoke to Yahoo! Sports about in 2012, and wants to give back more to poor Brazilians.

"I realized that I have many projects to be done, many interesting things, and if everything goes right, I will do this," Silva said.

"I just opened a free, public MMA gym in Paraiba, so why can?t Curitiba or Sao Paulo have one? No money? Someone needs to do this. I?m tired of asking, so I?m going to do that on my own hands at the congress."

"No more corrupt politicians stealing from us," he went on.

"This generation [of politicians] needs to go to jail, retire or die. It?s the time for the good people, but we need to do something. It needs to be good for everybody. And if you think [soccer star turned politician]Romario is controversial, wait until I get there."

Demetrious Johnson open to UFC super fights

Demetrious Johnson and John Dodson trade punches. (Credit: Tracy Lee for Y! Sports)

Before Demetrious Johnson won the UFC flyweight championship, he worked his way up the bantamweight rankings and unsuccessfully challenged Dominick Cruz for the 135 pound belt. Now that he's the 125 pound title holder, and looks better each fight, Johnson says he'd welcome the challenge of a super-fight against the bantamweight champion, whomever that ends up being after Cruz and interim champ Renan Barao fight in February.

?I think if Dana White was to approach me with a superfight and said, ?Hey, you and Dom or Barao, whoever the champion at 135 is -- we?ll make a lot of money if you guys do this fight,? [I?d say], ?Sounds good,?? Johnson recently told Sherdog.

?Let?s make it happen.?

That isn't to say that Johnson thinks he's run out of challenges at 125.

?The UFC?s doing a great job finding the new talent that?s out there and signing them,? he said.

?There?s great talent. We?ve got a lot of guys on the roster now.?

How do you think Johnson would match up against either Barao or Cruz now? Has he improved enough to do better than his decision loss to Cruz years ago? Could Johnson withstand the power of Barao?

Let us know in the comments section.

Sylvester Stallone KO?s Chael Sonnen

So, for whatever reason, the UFC allowed itself to be a part of Sylvester Stallone and Robert DeNiro's new film "Grudge Match." Don't get us wrong, we love Stallone and DeNiro both and we'll watch this flick about two retired boxing rivals going at it one last time.

But, if the above clip from the movie is any indication, "Grudge Match" takes a few shots at MMA, both metaphorical and literal, while simultaneously cashing in on the sport's cache. Stallone and DeNiro's characters show up to what appears to be a UFC event and are interviewed by play-by-play man Mike Goldberg, at which point they detail why they don't like mixed martial arts.

Stallone's character says it is for girls and DeNiro's character says it reminds him of professional wrestling. Enter Chael Sonnen.

The brash money-weight fighter marches over to the two old boxers and goads them into a fight. Sonnen slaps Stallone's character and then Stallone's character does his best Rocky impersonation and knocks Sonnen out cold with one punch (well, actually, Rocky Balboa never really had one-punch KO power so that was more of an attempt at being clever than an accurate comparison. *End Rocky nerd clarification*).

So, to summarize - the two main characters of the movie belittle MMA and then one of them easily beats up a real, recognizable UFC fighter. What's the up-side for the UFC and MMA in this cameo, exactly? We're hoping that there's more of a well-rounded representation of the sport in "Grudge Match" than what this single scene shows.

It's not that we're opposed to these two characters being opposed to MMA - that makes sense given their profession and ages - it's just that having one of them beat up a younger MMA fighter with ease is a bit of overkill.

On the other hand, given all the trash Sonnen has talked over the years, we're a bit torn. There's a bit of satisfaction in seeing him get cold-cocked, especially if it's just pretend.

Watch the scene above and let us know what you think. Are we being too sensitive about the portrayal of MMA?

Anderson Silva broke left tibia, fibula at UFC 168, faces long recovery after surgery

Following Anderson Silva's gruesome injury and loss Saturday night at UFC 168, the UFC released a statement about the former champion's emergency surgery in Nevada and future.

"Following Saturday evening's UFC 168 main event, former champion Anderson Silva was taken to a local Las Vegas hospital where he underwent surgery to repair a broken left leg," read the statement.

"The successful surgery, performed by Dr. Steven Sanders, the UFC's orthopedic surgeon, inserted an intramedullary rod into Anderson's left tibia.

"The broken fibula was stabilized and does not require a separate surgery. Anderson will remain in the hospital for a short while, but no additional surgery is scheduled at this time."

At the UFC 168 post-event press conference, UFC president Dana White said he had not and would not speak with Silva regarding whether or not he would retire or attempt a come back. According to White, it simply is not the right time and all that matters is that "The Spider" heal and get healthy for himself and his family.

"I don't want to count him out, I don't want to count him in. It's just really not the important thing right now. The important thing is he gets his surgery, heals up and then we go from there," White said.

The UFC's statement on Silva went on to describe the typical recovery time for the injuries the fighter sustained from getting a leg kick checked by Weidman.

"Recovery time for such injuries may vary between three and six months," according to the UFC.

The statement also asked that Silva be granted "privacy at this time," and said that he had not made a decision on whether or not he would ever fight again.

For his part, Weidman now appears to face the prospect of fighting former UFC heavyweight tournament champion and former light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort. Belfort has won three fights by KO in 2013 and White has said he's at the front of the contender's line.

Belfort spoke up during the post-fight press conference and politely made sure his name stayed in everyone's mouth as the next challenger to Weidman. Though the champion seemed unfazed by the prospect, he did say that he will have to take a few weeks to see where he's at because, he believed, he may have a torn meniscus in one of his knees.
