Brett Rogers sentenced to 60 days in jail for assault

Former Strikeforce heavyweight star Brett Rogers was sentenced to 60 days in jail for the assault that left his wife with a golf-ball sized wound on her head and without a tooth. He will also be on probation for three years, and was given credit for 26 days behind bars. He pleaded guilty to third-degree assault.

Rogers was arrested in June for the incident. Witnesses saw him hitting his wife while she was on the ground. They said blood was streaming down her face. He was cut from the Strikeforce roster not long after the arrest.

His last win in a cage came in October of 2010. After winning 10 straight fights to start his career, he dropped four of his final five. The losses were to Fedor Emelianenko, Alistair Overeem, Josh Barnett and most recently, UFC and Bellator veteran Eddie Sanchez on a Titan Fighting Championship card.

UFC?s early 2012 sched filling up, may include UFC on Fox 2 in Chicago on Jan. 28

The UFC isn't slowing down in 2012, in fact it's coming out the gates hard in January. If you're looking for a weekend off, good luck.

The UFC is looking at making its debut on FX on Friday Jan. 20 with Ultimate Fight Night 26 in Nashville.

Multiple sources confirm that Jan. 28 is the target for UFC on Fox 2 in Chicago at the United Center. That'll be followed by the Georges St-Pierre-Nick Diaz fight on Super Saturday in Las Vegas on Feb. 4.

Don't forget the UFC is scheduled to hit Brazil on Jan. 14 with its Rio de Janeiro fight card. That's four straight weeks of UFC fights until a short break before UFC 144 in Japan.

The desired fight for UFC on Fox 2 is for Anderson Silva defend his UFC middleweight belt against Chael Sonnen. Nothing is official with Silva battling shoulder issues.

UFC.com announced today that Pat Barry vs. Christian Morecraft and Duane Ludwig taking on Josh Neer are the first two fights slated for the FX card.

Along with Frank Edgar defending his lightweight title against Ben Henderson, the Japan card will feature tilts pitting Yoshihiro Akiyama and Jake Shields, and Anthony Pettis against Joe Lauzon.

Weidman, Tibau preliminary card winners at UFC 139

Weidman, Tibau preliminary card winners at UFC 139

Chris Weidman and Gleison Tibau rounded out the Facebook fights at UFC 139 in San Jose on Saturday with wins.

Weidman chokes his way to a win

Chris Weidman needed just 2:07 to get a technical submission win over Tom Lawlor.

Weidman relied on his wrestling early, getting a takedown in the first minute of the fight. He maneuvered into a D'arce. Lawlor didn't tap when he was in trouble, so the fight was stopped when Lawlor was unconscious.

Weidman, an All-American wrestler at Hofstra, continued his undefeated streak with the win. Lawlor fell to 7-4.

Tibau takes battle of grapplers

Gleison Tibau continued his undefeated streak in 2011 with a decision win over Rafael dos Anjos.

The first round gave dos Anjos a marked advantage on the ground, but Tibau had better striking in a tightly contested round. The majority of the second round was stand-up, despite the strong grappling backgrounds of both fighters. Again, the round was tight, as each fighter answered the other's punching combos. Late in the round, Tinau took the lead with a left-right combo, and then an unending bevy of unanswered shots. Somehow, dos Anjos stayed on his feet despite being very wobbly from Tibau's big punches.

Tibau notched a takedown in the third round and controlled dos Anjos for most of the round. That takedown represented the majority of any offense in the round. Dos Anjos returned to his feet and swung wildly in the last remaining minute, but it was too late.

The judges saw the fight 29-28, 28-29, 30-27 for Tibau. This win was his third in a row and puts his record to 25-7. Dos Anjos fell to 15-6.

UFC 139 postfight: Bonuses, company guys get wins and Faber could get Cruz plus TUF 15 coaching gig

UFC 139 postfight: Bonuses, company guys get wins and Faber could get Cruz plus TUF 15 coaching gigSAN JOSE, Calif. - It was refreshing to see three guys who've had a large part in helping to build mixed martial arts were big winners tonight at UFC 139. Urijah Faber, Stephan Bonnar and Wanderlei Silva all made it to the postfight press conference.

Faber picked up an extra $70,000 Submission of the Night while Silva's explosive tilt against Cung Le got one of the two Fight of Night awards handed out by UFC president Dana White. Dan Henderson and Mauricio "Shogun" Rua also got $70,000 for FON.

- The event drew 13,173 and a live gate of $1.268 million.

- Faber took out Brian Bowles less than six and half minutes to seal the deal on another title shot against UFC bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz. White confirmed that Faber is getting Cruz next, but that the champ is sidelined for a while with his latest hand surgery.

"We've got some ideas we were getting together tonight and talking about," White said. "We've got to talk to Urijah and Cruz first. Cruz just had hand surgery, so he's out for a little bit, but we have an idea. We have a plan."

When Faber made the suggestion that he and Cruz could be the coaches for Season 15 of "Ultimate Fighter," White raised his eyebrows as if to confirm that the pair have been discussed as possible candidates.

- Speaking of champs on the mend, Anderson Silva is working through shoulder issues. When a Brazilian reporter pressed White on reports that the promotion is headed to Sao Paolo, Brazil next June, he seemed shocked and wondered aloud how the news leaked. White didn't confirm or deny the report. When asked a followup question during his media scrum following the presser, White said it's very possible Silva could be held out until June.

- It's official that the UFC on Fox 2 will be in Chicago. White said the show will be two hours long and feature four fights. He would not elaborate on any of the candidates to fill the four main card fights at the United Center.

- UFC 139 Knockout of the Night went to 20-year-old Michael McDonald, who devastated UFC newcomer Alex Soto in just 56 seconds.

It's been quite a year for McDonald. He's 3-0 in 2011. Tonight, he likely made $7,000 to show and $7,000 to win. UFC 139's payday totals $84,000 for McDonald. He made $12,00 at UFC 132 and also won a fight of the Night bonus at Ultimate Fight Night 24 in March good for a total payday of $70,000. The Modesto-native has earned $166,000 this year.

Kendall Grove vs. Ikuhisa Minowa Targeted for ProElite 3

Former UFC middleweight Kendall Grove will meet Ikuhisa Minowa at ProElite 3 on Jan. 21 in Hawaii, MMAFighting.com has learned from sources close to the fighters. When contacted by MMAFighting.com, ProElite head of fight operations T. Jay Thompson would not confirm or deny the upcoming fight.

While not officially announced, ProElite 3 is scheduled to be held at the Neil S. Blaisdell Center in Honolulu, HI, site of ProElite 1.

According to sources close to the Japanese fighter, Minowa has signed a three-fight North American exclusive deal with ProElite.

Minowa, a 51-32-8 veteran of the sport, will be making his debut for ProElite as a middleweight. He has fought for Pancrase, PRIDE, DEEP, DREAM, and once in the UFC. The popular and charismatic Japanese fighter, nicknamed "The Punk" and "Minowaman," among other names, has won his last four fights in a row.

The 29-year-old Grove got back on the winning track when he defeated Joe Riggs at ProElite 1 in August. That fight marked his first since his release from the UFC following a second straight loss. The season 3 TUF winner ended his UFC run with a 7-6 record.

Also rumored for the Jan. 21 event is the return of Sara Mcmann and the semi-finals of the promotion's heavyweight tournament.

UFC 139 postfight video: Normally ?chill? Faber gets worked up over one cat

Urijah Faber admires legendary fighters like Randy Couture, Dan Henderson and Wanderlei Silva. They're all laid back guys outside the cage who turn into animals once the bell sounds.

Faber, a California native and child of "hippie" parents, wants to carry himself the same way, but there's one guy who gets his blood boiling outside the Octagon. It's UFC 135-pound champ Dominick Cruz.

Even after his huge win over Brian Bowles on Saturday night, Faber went right back after Cruz. He lost to Cruz at UFC 132, but still doesn't believe the champ is the best in the weight class.

MMA Top 10 Women: Ronda Rousey Enters the Top 5

Ronda Rousey is the next big thing in women's mixed martial arts.

The undefeated Rousey, who beat Julia Budd on the Nov. 18 Strikeforce Challengers card, has been running through her competition like few fighters, male or female, we've ever seen: Rousey is 4-0, and incredibly all four of her wins have come in less than a minute, all by armbar. Before turning pro she had three amateur fights, and she won all three of those by armbar in less than a minute, too.

And so, although she's still new to the sport and still hasn't been tested against the best women Strikeforce has to offer, Rousey makes my Top 5 as we rank the top pound-for-pound fighters in women's MMA. She looks that good.

What we don't know yet is whether Rousey is more than just a one-trick pony: If she faces an opponent who's able to keep the fight standing, will she be able to hold her own exchanging punches? And although she's not going to face anyone who's on her level as a judo player, will she be able to execute more than just her go-to arm bar if she faces an opponent who's sophisticated enough on the ground not to let Rousey get her arm?

It remains to be seen. But I think she's a future champion, and I think she deserves her place on the list of the top women in the sport, which is below.

Top 10 pound-for-pound women in MMA

(Editor's note: The ranking from the last time we ranked women are in parentheses)

1. Cris Cyborg (1): After more than a year away, Cyborg returns to defend her women's 145-pound title against Hiroko Yamanaka. That's an interesting matchup; Yamanaka has a 12-1 record and will have a height and reach advantage over Cyborg. But Yamanaka has never fought outside Japan before, and Cyborg has been so dominant that at this point it's very tough to see anyone beating her.

2. Zoila Gurgel (2): It's unfortunate that after Gurgel's huge win over Megumi Fujii, she's only been able to fight once. She's currently nursing a torn ACL and won't be back any time soon. It would make sense for Bellator to arrange another women's tournament for the right to take on Gurgel, although it's not clear whether that's in the promotion's plans.

3. Miesha Tate (7): Tate turned in a great performance against Marloes Coenen to win the Strikeforce 135-pound women's championship. What really worked for her in the Coenen fight was her superior wrestling, and it's her wrestling that would make her a favorite to beat almost any female fighter in the world.

4. Megumi Fujii (3): In the year since suffering her one and only loss to Gurgel, Fujii has gone back to Japan and won a couple of unanimous decisions. I'd like to see her back in the Bellator cage in 2012, and a rematch with Gurgel would be the biggest women's fight Bellator could make.

5. Ronda Rousey (NR): Rousey has been calling out Tate, and although the next shot at Tate's 135-pound title was supposed to go to Sarah Kaufman, Zuffa may decide that Rousey is too hot to hold off on right now. Rousey is an easy sell for promoters because she's smart and articulate and an Olympic bronze medalist in judo, and putting her in the cage with Tate would be one of the most marketable female fights that Strikeforce could arrange.

6. Marloes Coenen (4): First Coenen lost her Strikeforce title to Tate, then she lost her contract when her management at Golden Glory feuded with Zuffa. Now it's anyone's guess when or where she might fight next; she's with an organization called BlackEye Promotions, which has no events scheduled.

7. Sarah Kaufman (5): Kaufman's only loss was to Coenen, and since then she's won two in a row, supposedly earning a title shot against Tate, whom Kaufman beat in 2009. The question is whether Strikeforce will push Kaufman aside to put Rousey in the cage with Tate.

8. Jessica Aguilar (8): Aguilar looked great in her unanimous decision win over Lisa Ellis-Ward at Bellator 58. Aguilar has now won seven of her last eight fights, with the only loss coming by split decision to Gurgel.

9. Tara LaRosa (6): LaRosa has been inactive since her great heel-hook submission of Carina Damm in March, and as a result a couple of more active fighters have leapfrogged her in the rankings. LaRosa is one of the real pioneers for women's MMA. Let's hope she's back in the cage soon.

10. Alexis Davis (NR): Davis has had a couple big wins since we last updated our women's rankings, beating Julie Kedzie by unanimous decision in July and then beating Amanda Nunes by TKO in September. I hope Zuffa keeps Strikeforce's 135-pound women's division alive, because Davis could be a great opponent for Tate, Kaufman or Rousey.

UFC 139 picks, Vegas-style: Tough decisions to make reflected in close odds

SAN JOSE - The UFC put together a dynamite card tonight at the HP Pavilion. Want proof? Look no further than the betting odds. It's a tough call on all the big fights atop this card that features six former high level MMA champions.

Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole and Adam Hill from the Las Vegas Review-Journal joined myself last night on the "MMA Insiders" show on ESPN1100/98.9 FM to give their picks.

Iole and Hill both like Mauricio Rua in his fight against Dan Henderson. All three of us jumped on Cung Le minus-160. Urijah Faber was the pick of the crew over Brian Bowles, but all of us warned that minus-220 is a rich price against a guy with one-punch KO power. Listen here for the breakdown of all the fights.

Make sure to check out the straight up picks from the staff at Bloody Elbow.

UFC 139 betting odds:

UFC on Fox?s Three Stars: dos Santos, Henderson and Johnson

UFC on Fox?s Three Stars: dos Santos, Henderson and JohnsonThe UFC's first fight on network television delivered on ratings and gave the UFC a new heavyweight champion. Who stood out on the historic night?

No. 1 star -- Junior dos Santos: "Cigano" was given the opportunity to become a star and a champion, and he took advantage of it by knocking out Cain Velasquez in just 64 seconds. His emotional celebration is the kind of thing even first-time viewers will remember, making him well-known beyond the millions who tuned in from his home country of Brazil. Now, dos Santos can sit back and enjoy his shiny gold bet until UFC 141, when Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem will battle for the right to fight him.

No. 2 star -- Benson Henderson: Instead of grumbling about being relegated to Facebook fights after headlining a Versus card, Henderson put on a show against the very tough Clay Guida. He earned a Fight of the Night bonus, but more importantly, a shot at the UFC lightweight belt. He will fight Frankie Edgar at the event in Japan in February.

No. 3 star -- DaMarques Johnson: After losing to Amir Sadollah in March, Johnson was in need of a big win. That came in the form of a knockout of fellow "The Ultimate Fighter" alumnus Clay Harvison in just 1:34.

Who were your Three Stars from UFC on Fox? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.
