Wanderlei Silva points to Anderson Silva as proof that hard work pays off

Iconic scrapper Wanderlei Silva has never crossed paths with UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva inside the cage but the two have trained together in years past and are certainly appreciative of the other?s accomplishments in MMA. Though ?The Axe Murderer? has certainly achieved some incredible things in his sixteen-year career, few fighters if any have excelled to the point his countryman has.

?The Spider? has won sixteen straight fights in the UFC and dominated nearly every round he?s been in, a matter the PRIDE stand-out recently said was not coincidence but rather a testament to Silva?s approach to competition.

?I think every sport has a guy who is different. Soccer had Pele, Formula 1 had Ayrton Senna, and MMA has Anderson,? explained Silva in an interview with Sherdog. ?He is different, but it did not start now. He trained at a gym in a small neighborhood in Curitiba and was very dedicated. You don’t make an Anderson Silva in one day. The lesson he leaves is the self-dedication. He who trains like Anderson Silva has many chances to be like him. Do not let success or the money that comes with winning change your mind. He has been a UFC champion for so long, and he still trains hard.?

?He’s on another level. He serves as an example for many people, for young fighters like Jon Jones,? he concluded on the 33-4 Silva.

“Wand” Has No Respect for Chael Sonnen

As far as his own career, Silva stated he wants to now focus on fighting at 205 pounds or even catchweights slightly below that level but is done with middleweight for the time being. The grizzled brawler also mentioned he is healing up from some injuries, bulking up a bit, and expects to fight again in early 2013.

UFC fighter arrested hours before event

Lightweight fighter Jeremy Stephens, who is scheduled to fight Yves Edwardson Friday night's UFC on FX: "Browne vs. Bigfoot" event in a preliminary boutto air on Fuel TV, has been arrested, according to a report by MMAJunkie. Stephens was arrested on an undisclosed felony charge from out of state, and was taken into custody by the Minneapolis Police Department. He is currently being held without bail.

Despite the arrest of his fighter, UFC president Dana White insists the 26-year-old Iowa native will still be able to compete on the card, which begins at 5 p.m. ET.

Stephens, nicknamed "Lil' Heathen," first fought in the UFC in May 2007, and has attained a record of 7-7, with three wins coming via knockout. He fights out of San Diego, Calif.

UPDATE: Said White at the end of the Fuel TV-broadcast of the preliminary card, "Jeremy Stephens was arrested this morning at his hotel for a warrant from 2011. I've been working on this thing all day, and we're still working on it now. Jeremy, right now, isstill not off the fight." White did add, however, that at that moment, Stephens was still in jail.

UPDATE: After the event, White posted on the Underground Forum that he'd been working since 11:00 a.m. to arrange for Stephens to get out jail, but no deal could be reached. The charge stemmed from an assault in Iowa in 2011.

Bryan Caraway replaces injured TJ Dillashaw in UFC on FOX 5 fight with Mike Easton

TJ Dillashaw has pulled out of his UFC on FOX 5 fight and will not be in the cage across from Mike Easton come showtime on December 8. Instead, the Ultimate Fighter 14 finalist will be replaced by one of his housemates on the season, Bryan Caraway. The bout will mark Caraway’s second appearance as a bantamweight since stints at 155 and 145 pounds.

The change in lineup was confirmed today by UFC officials.

Caraway holds an overall record of 15-5 including wins in his last three tilts. At UFC 149, he was able to add to the streak when he submitted Mitch Gagnon in a Fight of the Night performance.

Easton (13-1) has also found success in three straight, remaining unbeaten as a UFC bantamweight. Fans last saw Easton in the cage when he took Ivan Menjivar the distance in July and was awarded the Unanimous Decision. His only career stumble involved an injury-related TKO in 2007.

UFC on FOX 5 is headlined by a lightweight title-fight between Benson Henderson and Nate Diaz with other notable bouts scheduled like BJ Penn-Rory MacDonald and Mauricio Rua-Alexander Gustafsson.

Miesha Tate pushes for Zoila Gurgel to get better Bellator billing

Former Strikeforce bantamweight champion Miesha Tate is not afraid to speak her mind. Last week, she caused a stir when she said there are circumstances where it's acceptable for a man to hit a woman. This week, she's speaking up on behalf of Bellator flyweight champion Zoila Gurgel.

Despite holding a belt and fighting near her hometown, Bellator has placed Gurgel's non-title bout with Casey Noland on the untelevised undercard. For good reason, Tate was annoyed by this and tweeted Bellator president Bjorn Rebney.

Tate sent several more tweets like these and encouraged her followers to tweet Bellator and Bjorn Rebney until they put Gurgel on the main card. Rebney explained his reasoning to MMA Fighting.

"Zoila's been plagued by injury after injury over the last 19 months, having not fought since March, 2011," he wrote. "We felt that the best road back for her did not include rushing her into a major fight against one of the top-ranked women in the world. This is not a world title fight as it's made significantly north of the 115 weight limit where she holds our title. Depending on how Zoila feels and performs on Friday, we can then determine the next appropriate step back."

But that doesn't explain why a champion isn't on television. Brian Rogers is not in a "world title fight," nor is he part of the Bellator tournament bouts that will be aired, but he's on the televised card. When fellow champions Michael Chandler and Ben Askren fought non-title bouts, their fights were on the main card.

When Tate spoke on men hitting women who hit them first, she was railing against a double standard. It looks like she's still fighting one this week.

Jason ?Mayhem? Miller goes on bizarre tirade during ?MMA Hour? (VIDEO)

On Monday's "MMA Hour," retired MMA fighter Jason "Mayhem" Miller went on a bizarre, profane tirade before storming out 45 minutes before the interview was due to end. He stayed in the character of Lucky Patrick, the fighter he plays in the upcoming MMA movie "Here Comes the Boom." He called host Ariel Helwani, who is Jewish, Aryan, dropped the f-bomb several times, and referred to the Columbus Day Parade in New York as the "wop parade."

Watch for yourself. There are several instances of vulgar language throughout the video, so it may not be right for you to watch at work. The 15-minute video is worth watching all the way through, but you only need to watch a few minutes to get an idea of his weird behavior.

In a vacuum, this could be seen as just a bit of poorly-executed promotion for the movie. However, if that was the case, Helwani wouldn't have made so many attempts to get Miller, not "Patrick," to talk. If Miller wanted to do this well, he would have let Helwani in on the joke before the interview started. He didn't. Helwani tweeted:

It's also not the only bizarre incident Miller has been involved with lately. After his release from the UFC, Miller tweeted UFC president Dana White, "Kill yourself, @danawhite, we are all begging you." He was then found naked in a church and arrested for vandalism.

Miller, who fought in the UFC, Strikeforce and Dream, has long been one of MMA's more outrageous personalities. This won him many fans and television work on shows like MTV's "Bully Beatdown," but also got him in trouble occasionally. He ran into the cage after Jake Shields won the Strikeforce championship, which touched off a melee between Shields' camp and Miller.

Hopefully, he will get help with whatever is causing him to act so oddly.

Dustin Poirier battling Jonathan Brookins at TUF 16 Finale

UFC featherweight Dustin Poirier suffered his first loss in the Octagon earlier this year, falling to Chan Sung Jung in a surprisingly one-sided affair. The 23-year old will look to erase any lingering aftertaste from the defeat this December 15 when he faces Jonathan Brookins at the Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale.

The match-up has been confirmed by UFC officials.

Poirier, who had a five-fight winning streak snapped with the loss to Jung, holds an overall record of 12-2 including past success against the likes of Pablo Garza, Zach Micklewright, and Josh Grispi.

Comparably, Brookins is a former Ultimate Fighter winner with victories over Yves Jabouin and Michael Johnson. The 13-5 Brookins has finished eleven of the opponents he’s beaten.

Carlos Condit: ?The fact that I'm kind of being looked past, it puts a little bit of a fire under my ass.?

With all the talk about a potential meeting between welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre and middleweight king Anderson Silva, it?s apparently been easy for some folks to forget GSP has to get by interim title-holder Carlos Condit at UFC 154 for Silva to even be a relevant option. And, considering Condit is 28-5 with 26 stoppages and wins over a number of notable opponents, beating the ?Natural Born Killer? is much easier said than done.

However, Condit doesn?t seem to mind the notion that a lot of fans are overlooking him. In fact, he relishes it.

?I love kind of being the spoiler. I was the spoiler in the Nick Diaz/Georges St-Pierre scenario. Now I get to play that role again,? said Condit in an interview with The MMA Hour. ?It doesn’t bug me, if anything it motivates me. The fact that I’m kind of being looked past, it puts a little bit of a fire under my ass.?

The talented 170-pounders are set for a showdown on November 17 in Montreal. Condit will enter the evening on a five-fight winning streak including success against Diaz, Dong Hyun Kim, Jake Ellenberger, and Rory MacDonald.

Junior dos Santos: "I'm ready to submit someone to really show how good I am in my jiu-jitsu."

There are only a few constants when it comes to the build towards fights featuring Junior dos Santos, but one of them is the answer to questions about he plans on approaching his adversary. Since starching Fabricio Werdum at UFC 90 in his Octagon unveiling, Dos Santos has said he was always there to do one thing – knock people out.

According to the hard-hitting Brazilian, his second fight with Cain Velasquez will be no exception even if he’s ready for anything the former title-holder may throw at him.

“That time it was perfect for me. My first strategy is always to knock my opponents out and I will try to do that again. I know Cain Velasquez, I respect him a lot. He’s really tough. But I will give my best to win this fight, it doesn’t matter where,? Dos Santos recently told MMA Live. ?Of course I want to knock him out but if the fight goes to the ground, I will be ready to submit him too.?

Fans might have a lack of reference when it comes to the ground acumen of Dos Santos, but the Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira-trained brown belt wants folks to know he is always working on his ground game.

?I train a lot of jiu-jitsu, Brazilian jiu-jitsu. I’m working on my takedown defense. I know he’s a really good wrestler and he’s going to try to take me down and use his ground-n-pound where he’s very good but if the fight goes to the ground, I’m ready,? Dos Santos reiterated. ?Like I said, I’m ready to submit someone to really show how good I am in my jiu-jitsu.”

In his first fight with Velasquez, “Cigano” took his heavyweight title home after 64 seconds of cage time. If he comes out the winner for the second time, Dos Santos said he expects to fight the currently-suspended Alistair Overeem even if he’s not necessarily happy about the prospect.

?Dana White already said the winner from me and Velasquez is going to fight Overeem,” began the 28-year old before adding, “I don’t think he deserves to be fighting for the title because he failed the drug test (but) I want to fight this guy because he said a lot of things and I want to fight with the best. If he thinks he’s one of them, I want to fight him.”

Overeem Predicts Velasquez Will Beat Dos Santos

Dos Santos will get in the octagon with Velasquez on December 29 at UFC 155. In the co-main event former light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin will face Phil Davis and also on the card is a possible middleweight number one contender bout between Chris Weidman-Tim Boetsch.

?Teach Train Plan Tradition = Knowledge & Wisdom,? Ryron Gracie For The Movember Campaign

Lancaster LTD and Roots of Fight have teamed up to create a number of lifestyle branded apparel, paying homage to the icons that helped to shape pop culture and martial arts. In this video, Ryron Gracie talks about training under his grandfather in this promo for the Movember campaign. "My grandfather, Grandmaster Helio Gracie was one of my main teachers. All the principles of efficiency, of leverage of timing, of technique that my grandfather applied over the years effectively in his fighting career and in his life. He is now teaching me. We would go to academies and we would go train jiu-jitsu at different schools in Brazil. We would get there and he would immediately put me on my back and not allow me to just free spar and do whatever I wanted. Instead he would have me lay down and have whoever the best guy was in the room get on top of me and attack and attack, and at 18 years old this is a little frustrating. I want to get on top and I want to play my game and show him how good I am to get my black belt. Little did I realize that he had a plan for me. His plan was to get me comfortable in the worst case scenarios, because if you are comfortable in the worst case scenarios there are no worst case scenarios." Matt Hughes isn?t retired yet, but headed towards it

It's been more than a year since UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes was knocked out by Josh Koscheck at UFC 135. At 39, he has a career record of 45-9, and was the UFC welterweight champion twice with a total of seven defenses. With that sort of career, is it time for him to call it quits?

On the MMA Hour, Hughes said maybe. Since his last fight, he's sold his gym, and spent time raising his four kids and working on the family farm with his twin brother.

"I wouldn't say I've closed the door [on my career], but I've got my hand on the door handle," Hughes said. "You know it's been over a year since I've fought, and I've having a good time with my family raising my kids, which I think is a bigger thing than me competing, making sure my family is raised right. So I'm having a good time at home with the family, and kind of, maybe, lost the desire just a little bit to compete. I'm not retired yet, but it is looking like that's where I'm going."

Hughes said both his wife and UFC president Dana White have both gently encouraged him to hang it up. If he does, he wants to stay involved in MMA by working to improve the quality of judging.

Does Hughes have anything left to prove or is it a good time for him to hang it up? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

UFC 156 Targeted for January 19 in Brazil [Updated]

The UFC is planning its return to Brazil for January 19 at a site to be determined. The promotion hopes to headline the card with a featherweight title fight between UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo and former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar. The event would be the fifth UFC event in Brazil in the last year and a half.

Phil Davis to replace Chael Sonnen in fight against Forrest Griffin

The UFC was forced to do some shuffling at UFC 155 when it was announced that Chael Sonnen would be coaching the next season of The Ultimate Fighter and then face light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. The switch left Forrest Griffin without a dance partner at the December event, though the vacancy didn’t last long as officials have revealed Phil Davis will be stepping into the slot to face the former champion.

Griffin Not Mad at Sonnen for Taking Fight with Jones

Davis (10?1) is coming off of his UFC 153 win over Wagner Prado. In a controlling performance over Prado, Davis sunk in an Anaconda Choke late in the second round to get the tap. Unharmed in the fight, the timing seems to work as he will now face Griffin on December 29. Davis was looking for his first win since he suffered his first loss against Rashad Evans. He owns other past victories over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Brian Stann, Tim Boetsch, and Alexander Gustafsson.

Griffin (19?7) was last seen beating Tito Ortiz in July. Putting on a Fight of the Night performance, Griffin outworked the no-retired Ortiz for three rounds and got the decision. The fan-favorite has come out triumphant in three of his last four tilts.

UFC 155 is set to feature Junior dos Santos defending his heavyweight title in the main event against Cain Velasquez with other interesting match-ups including Joe Lauzon-Gray Maynard, Boetsch-Chris Weidman, and Yushin Okami-Alan Belcher.
