Injury-related layoff has given Georges St-Pierre a new approach to fighting

Even though UFC welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre wasn?t able to hit the gym as hard as he would have preferred during the year-plus he was out of action for health-related reasons, it doesn?t mean the fan-favorite didn?t take advantage of the time to refine his game in other areas. Specifically, it seems GSP has changed his mentality when it comes to both training and competition inside the cage.

According to St-Pierre, he has eliminated much of the pressure he once felt to finish his foes and won?t be overexerting himself any longer in hopes the reduced effort will actually produce MORE stoppages.

St-Pierre Admits Ring Rust Could Be a Factor in Next Fight

?I?m perfectly healthy right now, and I love it. (Before the injury) I had a lot of pressure and I over-trained. I think that was the main thing. I fixed all that, and I feel like I was reborn and I have the fire again,? said St-Pierre in an interview with MMAJunkie. ?My last fight with Jake Shields is a good example. I tried too much for the knockout with the big right hand. I tried to overcome it and got poked in the eye, and I had a lack of patience. A knockout comes when you don?t expect it to come.?

St-Pierre hasn?t put an adversary away in a bout?s allotted time limit since 2008. Conversely, his next opponent ? Carlos Condit ? hasn?t suffered a TKO/submission in more than six years, making for a true challenge in terms of ?Rush? notching victory before scorecards come into play. Of course, as St-Pierre has proven in the past, he can never be underestimated given the overwhelming skill and athleticism he possesses.

Condit?s clash with St-Pierre is scheduled for November 17 and UFC 154.

Anderson Silva Remains Highly Interested In GSP Fight As UFC 153 Nears

UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva was asked by MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani if a potential super-fight with Georges St-Pierre is still on his mind. “Yeah, this is my focus,” Silva responded. Silva, who is currently set to face Stephan Bonnar this Saturday night at UFC 153, has been more outspoken in recent months concerning a [...]

Injured Matyushenko calls Hamill?s win a ?weak fight?

Matt Hamill's return to the Octagon was less than thrilling. Hamill may have won his first post-retirement bout with a decision over Roger Hollett, but he didn't win many fans with the slow, plodding bout. The crowd at UFC 152 in Toronto booed the bout, and the fight was panned on social media.

One of the notable tweets about how boring the fight was came from UFC fight Vladimir Matyushenko:

At one point, it was supposed to be Matyushenko in the cage with Hamill. The fight that was originally made for UFC 152 was Hamill vs. Hollett. However, Hollett was still under contract with Bellator. Matyushenko stepped in to fight Hamill, but then tore his Achilles' tendon in training. Hollett had his contract situation cleared up, and was brought back into fight Hamill.

But even with his torn tendon, Matyushenko thought he could still bring a better fight than the one he saw on Saturday night.

Dave Bautista now facing Vince Lucero this weekend in MMA debut

Say what you will about the notion of former WWE Superstar Dave Bautista giving MMA a shot, but one label that can?t be attached to the 43-year old is that of a coward. Bautista is poised to make his Mixed Martial Arts debut this weekend at CES: Real Pain where he was originally scheduled to face fellow newcomer Rashid Evans. However, Evans was pulled from the pairing last week due to legal problems.

Rather than back out of the bout based on the lack of preparation time, Bautista has not only agreed to compete at the event but will take on a much tougher adversary in the form of Vince Lucero.

The new match-up was confirmed this morning in a promotional press release.

Bautista Remains Realistic About Where Love of MMA Will Take Him

Lucero holds an overall record of 22-22-1 with twenty stoppages and more than a decade of experience behind him. After an extremely rough patch where Lucero went 0-9-1, the Bellator veteran has picked up wins in his last two tilts.

Bautista has said in the past his interest in fighting has nothing to do with a desire to go any sort of distance in the sport or even make money but rather a means of living out a dream of testing himself in such a capacity.

Miguel Torres meeting Marlon Moraes at World Series of Fighting event

It looks like bantamweight star Miguel Torres officially has an opponent for his first fight outside of the UFC/WEC since 2007, as World Series of Fighting officials have announced the former WEC champion will face Marlon Moraes at the organization?s inaugural event on November 3. He will enter the bout with nearly 4X his opponent?s experience but lacking Moraes? current momentum.

The WSOF 1 card is set to feature a slew of stand-outs including the likes of Gerald Harris, Gesias Cavalcante, and Andrei Arlovski.

The 40-5 Torres is coming off a knockout loss to Michael McDonald that in part led to his UFC release. Prior to the bout Torres had won three of four fights including success against Nick Pace and Antonio Banuelos but fell out of favor based on some personal behavior.

Torres Explains Appeal of WSOF

Meanwhile, Moraes holds an overall record of 8-4-1 but has won his last two tilts with a sub-minute knockout in his most recent effort.

Jake Ellenberger admits he has a long road ahead of him to earn title-shot

UFC welterweight Jake Ellenberger is one of the most talented fighters in the division. He?s beaten a number of highly-respected adversaries and is 6-1 in his last seven fights. Unfortunately for Ellenberger, that lone blemish came in his last bout, and as a result he understands he has a lot of work to do before putting himself back in position to challenge for a championship.

?The division keeps getting better. It’s hard to put together a win streak in any division, especially in the welterweight division. There are so many guys who are underrated, incredible and go unrecognized,? admitted Ellenberger in a conversation with MMAInterviews. ?I think it’s so hard to put three, four, or six wins together to get a championship shot in the welterweight division. Consistency is the big thing. It shows how bad you want something.?

Ellenberger Out for Revenge in Next Rumble

The 27-6 Ellenberger will have an opportunity to right his career trajectory in a little more than a week when he takes on Jay Hieron at UFC on FX 5. The two met once before more than five years ago where Hieron won a Unanimous Decision under the IFL banner.

Shane Carwin injures knee but fight with Roy Nelson still expected to take place

The UFC has seen its fair share of headlining fighters go down for health-related reasons over the past few weeks. Unfortunately, it appears heavyweight Shane Carwin is now one of them, though on the bright side he is only expected to be out for a few weeks and won?t be forced to withdraw from an upcoming tilt with opposing TUF 16 coach Roy Nelson.

Carwin revealed his status on Twitter, saying he would be unable to travel overseas for a signing he?d been scheduled to participate in due to some problems with his knee.

MMAWeekly later confirmed the injury with Carwin?s management where it was stated the hard-hitting heavyweight hadn?t torn anything and would be back to 100% in time for a December 15 fight with Nelson at the Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale. The minimal nature of the damage is certainly good news to fans of Carwin, as the 37-year old has been out since June 2011 due to a variety of injury issues.

Carwin: “I hate Nelson as a person…”

Nelson and Carwin can both be seen heading TUF teams every Friday night on FX. The two men have yet to bump heads on the show, though their dislike of one another on a personal level is well-documented due to numerous spats in the media.

Strikeforce fighters compensated after fight cancellation

After Strikeforce canceled Saturday's events, fighters worried about their finances because they didn't have the fight pay day. The good news is that they still will receive some compensation from Zuffa, the parent company of the UFC and Strikeforce.

MMA Junkie confirmed that the fighters left without a bout will get their "show money," or the amount they would get for fighting regardless of the bout's outcome. As far as the sponsors who also add to their fight night payout, it's up to each individual sponsor on how they want to proceed.

[Kevin Iole: It's time for Showtime, Strikeforce to cut losses, move on]

Since finding out they didn't have a fight, a few fighters took advantage of not having to cut weight.

Gian Villante had to cut down from 240 to 205. He was in the 220 range when the fight was canceled. He headed to Taco Bell when he heard the news.

"If I'm going to be honest, the first thing I think is, alright, I'll just go to Taco Bell, but I don't want to go crazy," Villante said to MMA Fighting. "So I went with a cheesy gordita crunch with chicken, and they have this new thing, a Doritos taco shell, that just looked amazing. That was calling my name, I went for that one. I had about three of those. I went home and there was this veal parm hero that was in the fridge for about a week now that my brother left in the refrigerator. It's been looking at me for a week and it's just torture, so, I'm like you know what, I'm eating this thing. I ate half a veal parm hero that was a week old and didn't even taste good, and then I had about a half a gallon of ice cream, chocolate chip cookie dough."

That's downright astounding. Thank goodness he is being paid at least his show money, as he might need to stock up on some healthy food to make up for that binge.
