Alexander Shlemenko: 'Losing to Tito Ortiz shook me'

Dealing with adversity, with loss, is often what defines a champion. Long streaks of dominance are fine and preferable, but they don't tell someone what kind of fighter they are.

Heading into his light heavyweight fight against UFC hall of famer Tito Ortiz, Bellator middleweight champion Alexander Shlemenko had won thirteen straight fights. So, it is little wonder that he felt so confident heading into the fight.

After being dispatched via choke by Ortiz in under three minutes, however, the Russian admits to being "shaken up." Shlemenko's dominant streak of wins had just come crashing down, but he responded to the fall like a true champion - by getting back in the gym immediately.

"I started training again the next day, after the fight [with Ortiz]," he tells Cagewriter through a translator, two days before returning to the cage in Phoenix against Brandon Halsey.

"I was so upset and not just because I lost, but because of the way I lost. I didn?t even get punched once. I didn?t get scratched in the fight...the loss really shook me up. It shook me to the point where, after the fight, I feel like a new fighter. So, that and because I had to help a student of mine get ready to fight, it was easy psychologically and physically for me to get back into training hard."

Shlemenko also says he made a great deal of changes in his training, from stand up striking to wrestling and submission work. However, the biggest change in his training was his attitude towards it.

"Yes, I made some significant changes," he reveals.

"First and foremost, however, I changed my attitude towards training. During my preparation for Tito, I felt way too relaxed. I have changed my mental approach to training, in addition to learning a lot of new techniques."

Shlemenko may need all that in order to win his next bout on Friday. According to the champion, his opponent Halsey brings a strong grappling game and a sharp mind into the fight.

"He's a strong, big guy with a lot of weight. Obvisouly he's a great wrestler and against Brett Cooper he showed that he's also a thinking fighter," he says.

"He thinks about strategy before his fights and he utilizes that strategy well in the fight."

In Halsey, Shlemenko will fight an undefeated contender who doubtless has the confidence of a professional who has never tasted defeat. "Storm" has the confidence of a champion recently wounded, however, and the lessons learned from recent defeat may make him all the more dangerous.

He doesn't know what will happen on fight night, but he has visualized one thing over and over, in the weeks leading up to Friday - Winning. "It is difficult to visualize what may happen in a fight," he admits.

"But the one thing I can visualize is that, at the end of the day, my hand will be raised again and I will keep my belt."

Brandon Halsey: 'I'm expecting the best Alexander Shlemenko'

Brandon Halsey (7-0) gets a shot at the Bellator middleweight title Friday in Phoenix, when he challenges champion Alexander Shlemenko (50-8). The undefeated American wrestler has motivation beyond the gold belt, however - he wants to keep the "0" on his record.

"Yeah it feels good to keep the momentum going and stay undefeated. I want to keep that going," he tells Cagewriter.

Up until he lost a non-title, light heavyweight fight with Tito Ortiz last May, Shlemenko had a great deal of momentum going himself. It had been years, and thirteen fights since the Russian had dropped a fight before getting submitted in the first round of his fight with the former UFC champ.

Shlemenko recently told us that he's a new and more dangerous fighter since that loss. Halsey doesn't doubt it, and expects the champion to have all his confidence back come fight night.

"I have no idea what his mindset is but I know he is capable of overcoming adversity," the challenger says.

"I?m expecting him to bring his best. I?m prepared for the best Alexander Shlemenko."

One of the champion's main strengths is his almost ridiculous amount of fight experience. He estimates that he's competed in fight sports over a thousand times, and his professional MMA record lists nearly sixty fights.

With just seven pro fights in total, Halsey would seem to be at serious disadvantage when it comes to experience and the savvy that comes with it. The Californian says he's more than an MMA newcomer, however - he's a life long combat sports competitor.

"I've been wrestling a long time," he explains.

"I've been on this type of big stage before. Having seventy fights doesn?t mean that you have the experience advantage. I'm looking forward to the spotlight. I'm ready to go."

Halsey's goals don't just include staying undefeated and winning the Bellator title, either. The 28 year-old wants to become the best fighter in the world, pound for pound, by the time he's done.

"[Winning] is going to be a good feeling," he says.

"Everyone looks forward to holding a title. But I'll still have to move forward. I want to be the best fighter in the world, pound for pound, one day."

Cheick Kongo says his engine is just getting warmed up

After a long tenure with the world's top MMA promotion, Cheick Kongo left the UFC on his own accord. However, he did so while nearing 40 and having lost two out of his last three bouts.

Though it wasn't long ago, it would appear to be a long time ago compared to where the Frenchman is now. The heavyweight striker has won three out of his last four fights in the Bellator promotion and has another big fight, against Lavar Johnson, this Friday in Conn.

Despite the apparent turn-around, Kongo says it's the same him and that he's taking everything in stride. "No, this is not a new moment [for me]," he says.

"I always enjoy life like it is. But when the engine gets warmed up and has the right gasoline in it, things go well."

Kongo may feel like he's just warming up in his career, but he also admits to taking things one fight at a time. The fighter has long had business investments and interests outside of the cage and continues to do so, in hopes of securing income in his future without prize fighting.

Kongo has also changed up some coaches and training partners, he says, in order to "get some fresh blood" in his camp.

Among the places he gets work in are friend Quinton "Rampage" Jackson's gym and Antonio McKee's "Body Shop." Kongo says he's training smarter these days, not just grinding himself down.

And, despite being 39 years old and in the 14th year of his pro MMA career, the Parisian says he's in no rush. "It's not a rush, it's not a race," he says.

"If you want to perform in the right way, and stay on track, you have to be smart. You have to be clever. I made some mistakes in the past."

Kongo is also unconcerned with how much his stock rises or falls based on popularity. The man is about his business, and his business is fighting.

"I'm a calm and quiet person," he says.

"I don't need to get a lot of attention on me. Do your job and leave everything out there until you have to do something else. After MMA, after sport, I will have another life. So, I like to keep myself very calm, busy and active. I still have the passion to progress, though."

UFC champ Anthony Pettis to get Wheaties box cover

For the first time in Wheaties' 91-year history, the General Mills cereal asked fans to decide a box cover athlete, and they chose UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis. The Wheaties NEXT Challenge asked fans to vote for their favorite athlete by logging workouts through the MapMyFitness platform or by connecting compatible devices.

Over 71,000 people, in all, participated in the Wheaties NEXT Challenge and "Showtime" fans logged a total of 324,025 workouts, giving the fighter the win. Pettis' Wheaties box will be on grocery store shelves in early 2015, and will be the first version of the iconic cereal boxes to feature an MMA fighter.

?We are thrilled to welcome Anthony Pettis to the Wheaties family and congratulate him and his fans on their remarkable effort and accomplishment,? David Oehler, marketing manager for Wheaties said in a statement.

Pettis competed not just for himself, but also on behalf of two charities, the Gadzuric Foundation and Exploit No More. General Mills will donate an unspecified amount to both charities, based on the amount of workouts logged by Pettis fans.

Pettis will likely next be on your TV screens as a coach on The Ultimate Fighter, season 20, which begins airing Sep. 10 on Fox Sports 1. Pettis will coach opposite Gilbert Melendez and then the two will face-off Dec. 6 for Pettis' lightweight world championship.

Anthony Johnson wants catchweight fight with Alistair Overeem

Anthony Johnson is one of the hottest light heavyweights in the UFC, but he still wouldn't mind locking up with down-and-out heavyweight Alistair Overeem. The two former teammates have exchanged insults and allegations in recent weeks, with Johnson saying that Overeem was a selfish and dangerous training partner back when he did work with the Blackzilians team in Florida.

"I'll fight him, I don't care. I've already trained with him before. Why not? To me it's just a fight. If the fans want to see it, I'm down to do it. I ain't said 'no' to any fight ever," Johnson claimed in a recent interview.

"I'd meet him at a catchweight. If he wanted to meet me at 225, let's do it. Or whatever, 220, I'd do that. Or I'd meet at 230 at the dot, if he was down to go that far. Let's do it. Even if I fought him, it's a dangerous fight. He's still got weapons that are crazy. He was hitting Ben with some crazy knees. He's a dangerous fighter still, but I'd definitely test him."

The heavyweight class weight limit is 265 pounds and Overeem has often been close to that mark. Johnson used to compete in the UFC's welterweight division.

Johnson has also won his last eight fights and Overeem has lost three out of his last four. As such, each man is on a quite different path in their respective division.

Clearly, AJ is confident in his skills after sparring with Overeem in the gym. The smaller man insists that he would take the fight, simply because of personal animosity and acknowledges that Overeem would be a dangerous fight for him.

"I don't have anything against him as a fighter," he said.

"I think he's a beast when it comes to fighting. My things were other personal stuff."

Joe Lauzon: 'I didn't know if I would ever fight again'

UFC lightweight star Joe Lauzon always planned to take a lot of time off from competition to make way for the birth of he and his wife's son. Lauzon got back in the win column with an exciting decision over Mac Danzig last December and carved out time to help get his soon-coming son Joey on his feet before taking another fight.

Joe and his wife had no idea how involved and scary things would get, however. In the first week of January, 2014, Joey Lauzon was born - bright, beautiful but already struggling more than any baby deserves to.

Joey was born with a cancer called Neuroblastoma. He couldn't leave the hospital for a long time and had to begin chemo-therapy at just days old.

Doctors were worried that the large tumor in his back might even sever his spinal cord. The stress and danger to their newborn son was seemingly all-encompassing for months.

Lauzon says it was the most trying time of his life. "Definitely," he tells Cagewriter about a week before he is set to make his Octagon return Sep. 5 on the UFC Fight Night main card against Michael Chiesa.

"At least, early on. Things have been really good since March. Since march sit and wait kind of deal. We?ve been really lucky The first two months we were completely helpless. We couldn?t do anything.

"It is really weird being so helpless because I'm used to taking an active role and getting things done, dealing with things head-on. All we could do was go to the hospital every day, do what the doctors said.

"There?s really no great way to cope on it. You just try to stay positive and informed every single day. There were a lot of things I couldn?t change. I can't take cancer away. So, I just tried to be there for Katie - who was there all day, every day. We had tons of help from friends and family as well."

Needless to say, during this time MMA was not the most important thing on Lauzon's mind. In fact, at one point he wasn't sure if he would ever make a return to MMA competition.

"For a little bit I really didn?t know if I'd fight again. We had to think, 'what's going to be the deal with Joey?' If it continued to be a 24/7 job dealing with him we started thinking about what we were going to do next. Would we focus on the gym more or whatever. Joey had hospital shots every day, his immune system was compromised from the chemo therapy, he had doctor's appointments just about every day," he explains.

"Luckily, he's done great. They were straight up with us and said, 'he's got cancer but if you're going to have to get cancer, this is the type of cancer to have.' If they catch it before eighteen months, there's a really good prognosis. Something like 85%-90% survival rate. If they discover it past eighteen months, then that drops down to 30%. Neuroblastoma has been studied a lot so they know a ton about it. Sometimes they don't treat it at all. They just keep an eye on it."

Little Joey went through three rounds of chemo-therapy and was eventually was allowed to go home with his parents, but with constant visits from nurses. As he got stronger, however, the nurse vists were no longer necessary.

That's when Joe Sr. says he was finally able to start relaxing a little bit. "That's when things started to feel a little bit normal again," he says.

In July, a scan showed no evidence of the cancer left in Joey's body. "July 3 is his unofficial birthday," Joe says with a smile.

"That's the day the oncologist told us that there was no sign of cancer left. Now he has monthly MRI scans. Later, it will be every two months, eventually it will be just once a year, for the rest of his life."

Joe says that, though he didn't know if he'd be able to fight again, his wife Katie made him get back into training a couple weeks after their son's birth. "After two weeks in the hospital for 11-12 hours a day, I started stretching, bouncing and shadow boxing in the hospital," he remembers.

"People were looking at me weird. Katie told me, 'you have to train again.' She was there every day and she was amazing. So, I was able to start training a bit, again. If I trained in the morning, I would go to the hospital at night. If I trained at night, I would go to the hospital in the morning."

Once Lauzon felt comfortable committing to fight again, and signed to take on Chiesa, he said his training kicked into high and effective gear. "Camp has gone really well," he says.

"The first couple weeks of camp would deviate a little bit from the normal routine but eventually I decided that I needed to focus on the fight."

Lauzon insists that the results have been good. The red-hot Chiesa represents a big challenge to Lauzon (check back with us Wed. for more from Joe on how he matches up against The Ultimate Fighter winner), he knows, and "J-Lau" is confident that he'll be better than ever come Sep. 5

"I feel better for this one than for any other fights," he says.

"I'm really sharp and things have come together at the perfect time. In some other camps I thought I peaked a couple weeks early. I'm really dialed in, now. I'm good, strong, and fast."

Eddie Alvarez agrees to new deal, to meet Donald Cerrone at UFC 178

Eddie Alvarez has longbelieved he's the best fighter in the world. Now, the former Bellator lightweightchampion is going to get the opportunity to prove it.

A whirlwind day ended for Alvarez Tuesday with a series of interviews, after he agreed to a new UFC contract and will face Donald Cerrone in the first bout of his new deal at UFC 178 at the MGM Grand Garden on Sept. 27.

Alvarez had been in a protracted legal dispute with Bellator and had sued to get out of his deal. But Alvarez settled and came back to fight one fight final, a rematch for the lightweight title against Michael Chandler last year. Alvarez won that bout to win the titlein a sensational battle after he'd lost to Chandler in an epic match in 2011.

He was at odds with Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney, but when Rebney was let go in June and replaced by Scott Coker, things kicked into motion. Coker on Tuesday morning announced Bellator had released Alvarez from his deal, making him a free agent.

A few hours later, he'd agreed to a new deal with the UFC and what should be the hotly anticipated fight with Cerrone.

"This is going to be an extremely fan friendly fight," he said of his bout with Cerrone. "How can it not be? You have two guys with the some of the highest finish ratios in all of the sport. You know people are going to love this fight. How can they not? These kinds of fights, these big fights that get everyone talking and interested, these are the fights I want. I want to fight only dangerous guys. Whenever I've done that in my career, I'vestepped up and risen to the challenge."

Alvarez, 30, is 25-3. He's long sought the kind of stage the UFC will provide.

Alvarez is rated fourth at lightweight by Sherdog and fifth by MMA Junkie. He wasn't eligible for the UFC rankings because the UFC's rankings, voted on by media members, are only open to UFC contracted fighters.

The fight with Cerrone will give him the opportunity to prove his contention that he's the best in the world.

"I want to prove the naysayers wrong," Alvarez said. "They're everywhere. And to be honest with you, they're all I see and they're what motivates me. I have a tremendous support from a lot of the Underground fans. They believe in me, they want to see me do well and they're behind me. But there are a lot of people out there who don't believe it, and so I want to separate perception and reality. I want to be able to do that.

"What they perceive is not real. I'm the No. 1 fighter in the world and they're going to see that very soon."

Below is the full first fight between Alvarez and Chandler from 2011 that many thought was that year's Fight of the Year.

Wanderlei Silva's lawyer says commission can't punish him

MMA legend Wanderlei Silva declined to submit to a Nevada Athletic Commission random drug test at his Las Vegas gym last spring despite being tabbed to fight months later at UFC 175 against Chael Sonnen. Sonnen himself would fail two random drug tests administered by the NAC.

The NAC has filed a complaint against Silva and looked to deal with his case at a recent hearing but pushed him off of the agenda when the Brazilian's attorney Ross Goodman contended that the commission did not have jurisdiction to test Silva at the time they tried because his license to fight in the state was not current.

In an interview with MMA Fighting this week, Goodman maintained that position, adding that Silva had not yet even signed a bout agreement to face Sonnen, despite the fact that the UFC, and indeed Silva and Sonnen themselves, had been promoting the summer match up for months, including while taping an entire season of The Ultimate Fighters as opposing coaches.

Goodman said that he's looking forward to making his case at a future NAC hearing. "We?re looking forward to having that hearing, and looking forward to making those arguments in a public forum," he said.

"Hopefully, we can prevail to common sense with respect to the commissioners," Goodman said. "It can?t be more black and white. Everybody understands that you have to consent, you have to be a licensee before anybody can take any sort of action against you. I think everybody understands the fact that you can?t discipline somebody who is not licensed before you. It?s just as plain as that.

"The actual complaint is that Wanderlei violated their drug policy, and if you look at the statute, you look at the section that they?re trying to discipline Wanderlei under a clear state that you have to be a licensee...It makes all the difference in the world. It expressly says you have to be a licensee. This is plain as simple as that.

"[The NAC] takes one section out of context when says ?a person.? Before I even explain that, if they valid what he?s saying, the commission would have the authority to discipline anybody that?s a person. That is absurd. That?s unreasonable. If you look at the statute that they took it from, the statute is a licensee statute. You have to read everything in context. There?s no statute which talks about that they can discipline somebody because they are person.

"Unlike Chael or other people, [Silva] had not signed a bout agreement, he wasn?t under contract, and he wasn?t a licensee. You can?t go have somebody to submit to a test because they?re potentially going to a fight on a feature card."

Goodman went on to say that, should the NAC not see things he and Silva's way, he will seek remedy in front of a court and judge. We'll keep you posted on developments with this story, including responses from the NAC, as they occur.

Tarec Saffiedine: 'I have the tools to beat Rory MacDonald'

UFC welterweight Tarec Saffiedine has won five straight bouts and believes he's one or two wins away from a title shot, as he heads into his Oct. 4 UFC Fight Night 54 main event against Rory MacDonald in Canada. According to the fighter out of Belgium, George St. Pierre's absence has left the 170 pound division wide open.

"It's been quite crazy...since GSP left the division," he said at this week's UFC fight Night 54 press conference.

"Everybody is, I believe, one or two fights away from a title shot, in the top ten, top fifteen. So, it's pretty stacked and I'm super excited to be a part of it."

As for his fight against MacDonald, who has won two-straight and seven out of his last eight, Saffiedine believes he's got the style to beat the home-town hero."I believe I stack up pretty well," he said.

"I truly believe that my style can match up pretty well with his style. When I was watching [MacDonald's last fight, against Tyron Woodley] I could tell that I have the tools to, stylistically match up pretty well with him...I'm training really hard to put on an amazing fight and get the 'W'."

Dana White apologizes for removing judge in Macau

The UFC released a statement Tuesday in which it conceded that president Dana White had no authority to order judge Howard Hughes to be yanked from his assignments at a fight card on Saturday at Cotai Arena at The Venetian in Macau.

An admittedly angry White pulled Hughes after Hughes scored the first two fights of the night.

That would not have occurred in a jurisdicition with a regulatory body, but because there is no commission in China, the UFC self regulates. But Marc Ratner, the UFC's vice president of regulatory affairs andthe man who normally handles such duties for the UFC, did not attend the show. He was at the card in Tulsa, Okla., later Saturday.

The UFC's full statement, which it posted on UFC.com:

After an internal review, the UFC organization announced today that a breach of its independent regulatory protocol occurred on Saturday night during UFC FIGHT NIGHT MACAO.

After the second fight of the night, UFC President Dana White requested that Howard Hughes, one of the event's five assigned judges, be removed from working any further bouts. Pursuant to UFC's protocol, neither White nor any other UFC executive possesses such authority. Nevertheless, protocol was breached and Hughes did not work further bouts on Saturday night.

The UFC organization has always been in support of government regulation and oversight. Additionally, the UFC has established a protocol when required to self-regulate events due to the lack of an official athletic commission, federation or other regulatory body. In those instances where UFC holds events in locations without a regulatory body, the UFC's protocol dictates that the organization's internal regulators will handle all commission functions independently and without interference by company executives or employees.

The UFC remains committed to maintaining the strictest regulatory environment for competition and vows that no similar breach of protocol will happen again.

Both White and the UFC apologize to Mr. Hughes for calling his professional judgment into question. Hughes has judged more than 25 UFC fight cards and the UFC looks forward to him working on its events again in the future.

Promoters can't be allowed to have influence over the judges and referees during a card, and the UFC correctly recognized this.

UFC 177 Embedded: Episodes 1 and 2

The first two episodes of the latest fun behind-the-scenes mini-documentary series, UFC Embedded, has earthquakes, training, goofing around and opponent taunting, taking place on two continents. The rematch is ill-advised for multiple reasons, most importantly Barao's health (he was badly hurt by Dillashaw a couple of short months ago and has had virtually no time to recover before jumping back into training camp), but it is nontheless a compelling one.

And UFC 177 Embedded brings fans into the final week of preparation before the big title bout this Saturday night in Sacramento. Check out the first episode above, and the second one below.

Ronda Rousey's main advantage is confidence, says Bethe Correia

Bethe Correia believes that, sometimes, confidence is more important than physical ability. Take, for example, UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey.

The Brazilian Correia is now 2-0 in the UFC's bantamweight division and will fight Rousey's friend and teammate Shayna Baszler Saturday at UFC 177. Though Correia respects Rousey's skills, she believes that the reason the "Rowdy" one has been able to dominate in MMA thus far is because she's simply more confident than her opponents.

"It?s not that she?s better than the opponents she?s fought, but they don?t believe in themselves," she said in a recent interview with Guilherme Cruz.

"Her look shows it. They don?t feel they are better than Ronda. Ronda has this aura that she?s unbeatable. She needs to face someone that looks into her eyes and says ?you can?t beat me.?"

Correia, of course, believes that she is one such fighter. She plans to beat Baszler and then wants a title shot against Rousey.

"I think they lack of confidence...Ronda believes in herself, and the others get in there afraid of her. I?m not. I?m not afraid of her," she continued.

"I think I deserve a title shot. I will be 3-0 in the UFC with another win. That?s my dream and that?s what I?m fighting for. Let them decide. If they think I deserve it, I will honor this chance and do a great show."

Correia says she won't wilt under pressure and is in the UFC for just one thing - gold. "I?m not in the UFC to be just another fighter," she explained.

"I will get to the title one way or the other...I want a title shot and I will get there by talking or fighting - or both. I want the title and nobody can stop me."

UFC's Wanderlei Silva confident he won't be punished

Despite running from a drug test, lying about it and then admitting to using banned substances, UFC fighter Wanderlei Silva is confident that he'll be the next fighter to go un-punished by the Nevada Athletic Commission for drug test irregularities. Vitor Belfort was recently essentially allowed to regulate himself when he failed a drug test earlier this year (his second in Nevada), removed himself from a title fight, attempted to cover up the drug test until a Yahoo! Sports report revealed that the test results were soon to be released, then re-applied for a license and was granted one with ease and then handed a title shot by the UFC.

So, it may not be too surprising that Silva also has confidence that he'll go unpunished by the world's top fight regulator when he gets his next hearing August 21. In a recent interview, Silva seemed to be alluding to a possible defense that the NAC did not, or does not have jurisdiction over him because he is not currently licensed and was not when they attempted to test him in May.

"I?m already preparing my defense," Silva told said.

"There?s not much to be done, there?s no legislation over me. I don?t have a license and I?m not committed to fight in any event at the moment. I will do my defense and, as soon as I have [a fight] coming up, I will do the test and prove that I?m clean to get my license."

Of course, when Silva did run from the test, he had a well-publicized fight scheduled with Chael Sonnen in Nevada and was undoubtedly set to apply for a license with the commission. So, they were well within their rights and responsibilities to test the Brazilian.

Of course, there's no telling what will happen with Silva's case, with Nevada's erratic and hidden decision-making process, of late. So, the "Axe-Murderer" is free, for now, to continue to make dillusional-sounding plans.

"I want to fight in December, at the end of the year," he announced.

"They always do big events at the end of the year, and this fight could happen anywhere. I will be ready. I would like to fight in Brazil, but we can fight in Japan or even in the United States. But if it really is against Dan Henderson, I would like it to be in a soccer stadium in Brazil."

A fighter can dream, can't he? And, fight fans can certainly then groan.

UFC's Bobby Green calls Donald Cerrone racist, sexist, bully

UFC lightweight Bobby Green was set to face Donald Cerrone before the UFC signed Eddie Alvarez and decided to replace the Bellator champ for Green. Turns out, Green would have especially liked to have gotten his hands on "Cowboy" Cerrone.

According to allegations Green made during an interview Monday with MMA Fighting, Cerrone made racist comments about Green, a well as groped and bullied UFC fans at a UFC Expo. "[Cerrone] just said some racist stuff," Green began.

"He said stuff like, random racist stuff like ?we gotta check him, we gotta check him, you know how black people like to steal.' I'm like ?what the,' and I'm getting hot in front of thousands of people, all these people are here for the signing and they're going 'ohhhh' and 'ooooh' and 'ahhh.'

"His boy [Isaac] Vallie-Flagg [said] ?he had a little bit to drink,' he's like ?let it go,' I'm like ?man, I'm not tripping' and I'm laughing it off like 'hahaha. It's cool.' But inside, the real dude inside of me, we don't let that kind of [expletive] go, you know? I want to get his ass. But at the same time I'm like 'play it cool, don't make waves.'"

The UFC newcomer decided to lay low despite Cerrone's alleged comments in order to not escalate the situation. Later, during an autograph-signing session, Green says he saw Cerrone grope female fans and bully their partners.

"He was groping every woman in his line to do his signing," Green claimed.

"He's groping these women. They've got husbands, they've got fiancees, they've got boyfriends, I'm like, that's messed up man, just because this guy's a nerd and he can't do anything to you, you're going to do this to him. Girlfriend's cute, Donald Cerrone, picks her up, grabs her ass, starts grabbing on there and stuff and he's like 'I'm Donald Cerrone.' I'm like, 'you're going to piss somebody off, you get the wrong person they're going to get pissed.' He's like, 'what are they going to do to me, I'll knock them out.' I'm like what the? This guy's full of himself."

Green is no longer a UFC rookie, having won four straight bouts in the Octagon and eight straight, overall. So, he feels free to say what he thinks of the Greg Jackson/Mike Winkeljohn fighter, based on his alleged behavior at the UFC Expo.

"I liked the guy, I was a fan of him at the time. So I'm actually excited to meet the guy. I'm cool with him, I shake his hand, you know, and he's just been rude as hell," Green concluded.

"He is just the most obnoxious asshole I've ever met."

[VIDEO] Jose Aldo pushes Chad Mendes at media day

All the trash talk and accusations from afar between UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo and challenger Chad Mendes came to head when they came face-to-face Tuesday morning in Brazil to promote their UFC 179 title fight. The two met for a media day at Maracana Stadium and when it was time for them to pose for the cameras while squared up, Aldo got right into Mendes' face and then shoved him away.

People swooped in to get between the two fighters before any more extra-curricular activity could erupt. Great to see the UFC now doing even less to prevent brawls when bringing heated rivals together to promote fights, than they were before.

Does seeing Aldo shove Mendes get you more amped up for their rematch? Let us know in the comments section.

Bellator adds female featherweight division

Bellator MMA has reestablished the women?s division with two top featherweights leading the forefront. New Bellator President Scott Coker has added Marloes Coenen and Julia Budd to the roster to start the next era of the Bellator women?s division.

?We?re incredibly excited to bring in two of the best athletes competing in our sport today,?Coker said.

?We are making a commitment to bring back the female division to Bellator, and feature some of the world?s best in the Bellator cage.?

A former Strikeforce Bantamweight Champion and Remix World Cup Champion, Coenen has recorded a 21-6 professional record with 15 wins coming by submission and 12 in the first round. Ranked as the number two featherweight in the world, Coenen is ready to get back in the cage and put on an explosive performance for the fans in the first female fight under Coker?s reign.

"After fighting professionally for over 15 years, I am honored to be invited into the Bellator cage,? Coenen said.

?Fighting for Bellator brings my spirit back for fighting! It is great to be working together with Scott Coker again as we both have the same vision on fighting. My style is fighting with the objective to knock my opponent out or to submit her. That is exactly what I am planning to do the very first second I step into the Bellator cage.?

Budd joins Bellator riding a four-fight win streak and is currently ranked as the number three featherweight in the world. Having previously fought for Strikeforce and Invicta, the Canadian striker is known for her strong Muay Thai background and is looking for a strong finish in her return to the bright lights.

?I?m ecstatic about the opportunity that Bellator is giving the 145 female division and I?m especially excited to be one of the first females to fight for Scott Coker under the Bellator banner,? Budd said.

?This gives me the opportunity to showcase my skills as one of the best fighters in the world on one of the biggest stages in the world.?

Coenen and Budd are scheduled to square off later this year inside the Bellator cage live on Spike TV. What other female fighters do you want to see in the Bellator cage?

Vitor Belfort: 'Chris Weidman would be crazy to stand with me'

Lyoto Machida may think that UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman can successfully stand and strike with challenger Vitor Belfort but "The Phenom" himself believes he'll have the clear advantage there when they fight at UFC 181."He will fight standing against me only if he's crazy," Belfort said in a recent interview.

Belfort, who once won a UFC heavyweight tournament and then, later, won the UFC light heavyweight title from Randy Couture after a glove-edge from a missed punch sliced an eye lid of "The Natural," believes that he'll be considered a true three-division champion should he beat Weidman. And, while many fighters often say they simply concentrate on themselves during training camps, Belfort says he's training to specifically exploit perceived weaknesses in the champ.

"I'm ready to have a third world title at a third different weight class," Belfort said.

"I see a lot of openings from him and I'm studying this game since last year. I'm not focusing in his strengths but in his weaknesses and we saw that he has a lot."

'Big' John McCarthy soon to return to an MMA cage in Nevada

Several sources have told Yahoo Sports that popular referee John McCarthy will receive an official's license from the Nevada Athletic Commission and be assigned to work at UFC 178 at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas on Sept. 27.

The card, which will be headlined by a flyweight title bout betweenchampion Demetrious Johnson and challenger Chris Cariaso, will be the first McCarthy has worked in the "Fight Capital of the World," since 2007.

McCarthy, who along with Herb Dean is considered one of mixed martial arts' two finest referees, announced a brief retirement after working a show at the Palms in Las Vegas on Dec. 8, 2007, to take a broadcast position with The Fight Network.

He returned to officiating in November 2008, though he did color analysis for several MMA cards. But he ran afoul of Keith Kizer, the former executive director of Nevada commission, after making comments Kizer felt were unfair and overly critical.

Nevada, though, has been seeking to improve the quality of its refereeing and judging in both MMA and boxing since several controversies late last year. Those controversies got the attention of powerful politicians such as Gov. Brian Sandoval (R-Nev) and Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev). McCarthy began officiating at UFC 2.

McCarthy is expected to be granted a license at the commission meeting on Aug. 21 in Las Vegas, though it could extend until the first meeting in September. It is unclear which bouts at UFC 178 that McCarthy will work.
